Amsterdam takes the crown jewel for rent, but its the only global city in the Netherlands. Meaning: the only city with a sizable expat community, a population that is "used to" foreigners and (many) international companies. The rents and house prices are high for a reason.

The main problem I encounter regarding international students is how few most of them know and how little most of them care about the country they are studying in. I did not want to study in English, but I am Dutch and no Dutch university teaches in Dutch at the moment, so I have to study in English even though it makes me feel a foreigner in my own country, but it would be so much better if the people I encounter would just read the wikipedia page of the Netherlands. You would still have people unable to ride a bike (which is confusing), the 40% foreign students still does not speak Dutch, there will still be people drowning because they do not know you can't just safely cross rivers by swimming, but it might stop Indian rich kids from lecturing me about poor people and people having ridiculous ideas like they would be deported because a right wing party won an election. I mean we are a democratic country with a history, a culture, people with different views, etc. and I am also a human being trying to find a way through the system. Maybe someone does not understand the middle class also studies, but if they would ask why someone has a different oppinion, one could understand each other. Instead of that, I now get yelled at, redicualised or insulted. Maybe someone is concerned what a political change would mean for them, but they could just ask a fellow student, or just watch some English newsoutlet instead of making up rediculous things. (Be careful, American media tends to be extream it be to the right or to the left.) For instance in this case, the whole deportation thing was in no party program. When I asked someone about the way the university counsil campaines worked, I now had to argue with someone who thought that nonsens were true. I do get that people just doing a 2 year master do not learn Dutch, but it would be very helpfull for yourself to know some very basic words (hallo, tot ziens ect.) and would also be polite because it fulfills something of the Dutch custom to learn the lamguage of them of whom you want something. (Which is why had to learn English, German and French in school...) At least just don't say my language is inferior to English, don't ridicule me for mistakes and don't complain if I try to search in German after English and Dutch failed to give any results. And the ridiculous things I summed up were real things I encountered.

After my service in the Dutch Army, I emigrated to the US. Every month, my paycheck is not much left over. Going into civilian life would have put me at the poverty level. I never regret my decision to emigrate and become a US Citizen. Not all is Snow White Fairy Tale in The Netherlands. Why? I was born and raised there.

The netherlands is also a country full with people qho are using machines to stay alive ir being able to walk around, and ysually they look depressed and tortured
@brandonle62364 ай бұрын
They have 3 boxes for income taxes, 41 and 50%, there is also a 0% tax rates for incoming up to 10k might be bit higher by now) per year, then from that point till about 30k it will be taxed with the 40% from there anything above 30k it will be taxed with the 50%, it's not like your whole income is taxed with 50%, keep in mind that you also get reductions under 30k, which makes the endcalculation lower than 40% and since 2006 allhealth care institutes has become private, that means your usually health costs that is calculated from yoyr gross income should been paid out nett to you as you need to pay tge health insurance by yourself, there should be no health insurance abducted from your gross salary, still some companies pretend they don't know this law and illegally withholding that part to themselves
@brandonle62364 ай бұрын
@@spvdijk apparently they changed the laws again, and in this case it's even worse, what you are calling is zvw, that's not the costs of the health care institute, it's amazing that they even managed to tax something that has become a private institute and not a governmental one, well done, Dutch citizen are getting more screwed without them even realising it lol, thank god I left there in 2013

Only a few will be insulted if you call the Netherlands Holland. You may be corrected but not for being insulting. We chant "Holland, Holland, ..." during team matches, so how bad can it be considered? Regarding drugs; ... it's complicated. Drug possession is still on the books as a crime, but below 5 grams (?) soft-drug will not be prosecuted. You can legally buy small amounts of soft-drugs in a coffeeshop, but the process of supplying a coffeeshop with large amounts is still considered a crime.... go figure.

Don't go. Its not that good. The housing market collapsed, public transportation is expensive and unreliable, health insurance just to get ibuprofen, cold people, bad weather, a bit racist. Cool for vacation, but not to live.
