I think the reason why Freeman recognized Dr Kleiner but not Barney is because Ross was probably basing Gordon Freeman's backstory from Half-Life 1 only and ignoring any retcons introduced in Half-Life 2. So, for an example, Dr Kleiner was mentioned once in the PlayStation 2 manual for Half-Life 1 while Barney was never mentioned in any of Half-Life 1's manuals. Half-Life Blue Shift never mentions Barney knowing Gordon either, Barney's Mind does, but I don't think Ross wants to make fan work of his own series canon. So, with all that out of the way it's possible that Freeman is in an alternate reality, could even be canon to the actual games too for all we know! ... That or Freeman was just high and forgot. lol

I think the reason you’ve never heard about Leeto or the Argonauts is because their story is so fucking complicated It’s impossible to summarize properly, without just reading the books. Basically seven different people with complex motivations, backstories, and plots are all journeying together during the siege to reach the emperor and do various different things. I’d say the most important is John grimaricus, leeto, and ollanius persson. you’ve watched what leeto did. John Grimaticus is important for other reasons mostly related to the alpha legion, and genuinely hated by the community for being annoying and poorly written. And then ollanius persson is a perpetual Christian and the Emp’s first warmaster on ancient earth; he has one of the best chapters in the end of the death novels where he just dresses down the emperor for being an idiot and convincing him not to become a the dark king..
