I'm trying to get back into a project I started 6 years ago and had to stop cause I had my daughter. Now I am trying to re-read the outline and the outline itself is over 40 pages long. I may be a little over my head.

Once there was a young man who didn't study at university, for he was disabled, ill, and very poor. "I want to be a writer," he said and set himself the task of writing the greatest novel ever told. He studied every book he could find, watched every video on writing he could find, and took multiple online courses. Ultimately, he failed in his quest to write the greatest novel ever told and he gave up writing stories... Or did he? It's not difficult, just write and keep on writing. Don't worry if you're never published, the whole point is to be a writer, that is all that matters. Just write.

At first, I didn't care much for the interludes. By the end of the book, I found them a joy. After doing a reread of the series I have to say that they really flesh out the world and story. You don't really notice how much they are saying until you've read much further into the series.

Yes, same here! I outline/brainstorm some then I start writing to then realize some or all things need to change in the storyline and so I go back to outlining before continuing to write once more. Lolol it's so confusing.

I think my favorite part in writing my first draft (which I'm super duper close to finishing), is when I feel stuck on a part but finally decide on how to write it. I have a really bad habit of whenever I get stuck I abandon the project even after putting in so much work. But this time, I just decided to push through it and even if it isn't perfect, is is getting done.

This book and Kaladin will always hold a special place in my heart... Right before I read TWoK, my pet bird died. He was like a youngest son of my parents and a flying little brother to me and my sister. And after he passed away, I blamed myself for that. Because I once accidentally hurt him badly. I never forgive myself since then. When I finally got the part of Tien's death, storm it, I cry like Kaladin did in that chapter. And somehow in that moment of grief, I felt seen, felt understood. And soon after that Kaladin showed me that even if he's depressed, he didn't have to be defined by that. Therefore, reading TWoK will always be one of the most magical, touching experience in my life.

Thank you for sharing, and I'm sorry you had to go through such a heartbreaking experience ❤️🩹 The way grief is explored in TWoK is so sincere and poignant. I'm glad it was there to help you in your healing process!

Oh wow! I would have expected this video to be way older, but it's pretty recent! I'm just digging into it at the same time as you, lol! I definitely agree with your take on Dalinar. I get the sense he's Sanderson's favorite but Kaladin and Shallan definitely give higher highs :D I think Adolin's arc may have been my second-favorite arc in WoR, actually! It surprised me going into it, he didn't really do it for me in TWoK, but he's maybe one of my favorites now. Look forward to hearing more takes on Stormlight of you do more videos on it! :)

I'm about halfway through Words of Radiance now, and Adolin's POV is definitely getting more interesting! 😁
@vikaspydah93066 ай бұрын
I loved Kaladin's arc, and thought it was especially interesting how such a heroic character is brought to total ruin for basically the whole book without much chance to rise really - it's a great setup. I loved Dalinar's arc too, but thought Shallan's arc, and some of the interludes weren't as interesting and low paced (I think they're better in the next book).
@AndreaHecklerWriter5 ай бұрын
Yes, I loved Kaladin's arc for that! It was definitely more nuanced and uphill than I expected.

I agree, the interludes are great! I think my favorite character in book one is also probably Kal, but there are a lot of elements to Dalinar and Shallan that are really interesting with the context given by future books This is probably the weakest book for Adolin, but he might be my favorite in the series overall. I adore my earnest boy

I read the TWoK through my exams, and I was stressed and didn't quite savour it. I remember reading until the first interlude and not really being interested in continuing because it was still a lot of setup and worldbuilding, (which was interesting in its own way but didn't leave me to think about after closing it). I got up to the first interlude and absolutely hated getting more world-building with characters I had never seen before when I just wanted a more plot. The interludes and slightly slow pacing was my biggest bone to pick with walking in to TWoK, however retrospectively they added so much more to the book. I chugged along the rest of the book anyway because I just needed to procrastinate during my exams. Best decision I possibly made. The catharsis I felt was genuinely beautiful throughout the whole book. All the charecters were so real, there struggles were written perfectly. I dont think i have ever felt charecters that were so real before. I loved Kaladin having therapy with Syl. I loved Shallan questioning her values when Jasnah killed. I loved it when Dallinar beat some sense into Elkohar. I loved it all. Small details. Syl is writtin to have Adhd but Sanderson believes he failed in portraying that. Szeth ends up at Kharbanth for the last name on his assasination list which is the same place where Shallan first saw soul casting from Jasnah. The ecosystem on land of roshar is much more similar to the ecosystem in our oceans. This effect extends to almost everything on Roshar through the investiture. It doesnt really change much, but its interesting noticing it. All of Sandersons works under Cosmere are connected, that includes certain charecters appearing in other books, currently its just easter eggs, like in Interlude 1 of TWoK with (Demoux thats the only name that should ring a bell if you've only read mistborn) but has plans eventually grow to Avengers Endgame scale. Beware searching around coppermindwiki because there are so many heavy spoilers. Note that all of Cosmere has the same Underlying laws of Magic/Investiture I am also curious as to what you made of the epigraphs and interludes because they made absolutely no sense to me at all. Interludes I-1 (searching for hoid at the purelake), I-5 (Cusicesh the protecter, the giant marine animal) and I-7 (mistress destroys works of art), were genuinely chaotic in my mind. I like reading and peeping behind what the author wants me tome to see. I understood that I-1 is about the fisherman in the Purelake, but I wanted to know more about this hoid. in I-5 wanted to know where Axies fit into the rest of the plot. in I-7 I wanted to know who the mistress is and why she is so particular in what she breaks. I'm sorry if none of this is coherent; I'm literally procrastinating.
@Kvh476 ай бұрын
Same for me, on the first read I skipped the interludes just so I could get back to Kaladin
@CaptBighead6 ай бұрын
I felt the same stuff re: those interludes. I definitely don't think I always understood the "why" of the interludes; I think I can grok most of the epigraphs (?) now, and find them pretty charming/intriguing
@AndreaHecklerWriter5 ай бұрын
I've done some of my best reading while procrastinating too, so it's good to know I'm not alone! 😂 On the Interludes, I'm wondering how much more meaning I'll find in them if/when I do a reread of the series, after I've finished the installments that are out and maybe some other Cosmere works as well. There may have been some that I enjoyed more for the scenes themselves in the moment, but didn't necessarily have all the context to piece them into the larger story yet!

Oooh, I could have used some of this last year! This was full of lovely advice. Number 1 was pretty helpful me when it came to music specifically even if it wasn't the exact same songs, but ones that had a similar ~vibe I found helped (thanks to Hozier for releasing a new album right around the time I started my complete rewrite lol). And number 3 was more like a general 'why am I writing?' for me like not project specific but 'why do I write at all?' (not in a negative way, but genuinely asking myself). I wrote my YA fantasy's first draft the latter half of 2020 and basically went on (a sorta) hiatus from burnout for 2021 & 2022. Beyond life things, I had been writing with only traditional publication in mind since 2013 at that point so it actually took going back to fanfiction in 2022 to remind me that I write for fun too. I def feel like if the step away from writing or a project was goal-based ("why don't I have a book deal yet?") or rejection-based (not getting into an MFA program, shelving a book after querying) then having a bit of time where you remind yourself why you love writing in general (fanfiction, writing a poem and giving it to a loved one, writing the most self-insert and indulgent short story imaginable, working on the most extravagant worldbuilding bible you may not ever even use, writing AUs of your own characters, etc.) might help too.

I'm so glad it was helpful!! I've had to step back and rethink my overall goals with writing a few times, too. Sometimes we can get so lost in all the imaginary "next steps" that we forget to find enjoyment and fulfillment in our current step 😅 Best of luck with your writing!

I genuinely appreciated this as I'm currently attempting to return to a series I've been working on since 2018 with over 200k words, started over like twice so far. I find that the getting organized section is the one that I need the most as transferring between paper drafting to digital editing, then back to paper revisionBTW. yhe only way my brain works and I have reams of documents worth of unrefined notes. Obsidian is god-tier for huge fantasy projects btw.

Way to go on finishing the plot! I'm doing camp NaNoWriMo this month and my project was to finish editing the novel I wrote for NaNoWriMo last November. I got it done and self-published on Amazon. Today I started a new short story for a contest. I want to get the gist of the story down and then I'll go back and revise, edit, add, take out, whatever. Submissions end on the 30th so I didn't really give myself much time to get this one done. Fingers crossed! Happy writing!

This might be too late, but have you ever considered using dialect in your writing? Dialect can be a powerful tool to help writers bring the characters they have created to life. In a time like this, being unique might get you popular.
