This song is a banger but also does a great job outlining what's so cool about kanmusu and why sunken WW2 ships can make such compelling characters if you're not afraid to fully embrace the idea and "believe in" shipgirls, the way the lil browser game tries to prime you to. After all, you've got just about the best "lore" you could ever imagine-Character backstories full of courage, tragedy, mercy, fury, sacrifice, and twists of fortune that would be hard to believe if we didn't know they _really happened._ When you take those historical events and have their intensity literally bring the uniting presence in them to life as a character shaped by them and living in their aftermath (or in the case of the Abyssals, un-living), fighting over conflicting answers to their past-Trapped there forever by a vengeful obsession with loss and abandonment or trying to transcend it and heal by letting go and forging a new path together with others as a transformed self-then it's inevitable you're going to accidentally make your ship waifu game for teaching naval history to otaku turn out Akshually Very Deep You Guys. And I think this song gets that. It's too bad the show itself wasn't able to really go for it and depict a concrete & interesting interpretation of the setting, but whatever they picked would have alienated half the fans who see it differently and so their hands were tied. Oh well. If they ever do a third anime adaptation, I think it should be one of those anthology projects where each episode is by a different studio doing their own interpretation in their own style.

@@kxzuiStatic It's a shame, because Kancolle itself as a lil browser game setting filled in by your imagination can be an absolutely stellar science-fantasy war epic if you try to genuinely answer the question "what would it mean if sunken WW2 warships _really did_ suddenly come to life in our time?" Ironically this song's lyrics actually do a pretty good job articulating that question but the show sadly skirted around trying to imagine an answer. But precisely because the game leaves you to piece that premise together yourself from all the character lines or maybe just vibes & personal tastes, any official anime can't just commit to that because then they'd be privileging one kind of interpretation over everyone else's and tacitly curdling the very open-endedness that made & keeps it so popular in Japan. They really fucked up the second series for this exact same reason and wasted the Nishimura Fleet's story, so I don't foresee a third stab at an anime outside of like a nostalgia reboot a generation from now or something, but if by some miracle they get the chance they should get around this pitfall by doing an anthology series where each episode is a different short story in a different interpretation & style (even with one studio fudging it). Or by just counting on people to recognize by now there's still no "canon" and then writing a proper story about what it might mean and why it would be interesting if historical sunken warships were somehow transformed into pretty girls (and/or nightmarish deep sea horrors). The movie tried to do this a little bit (as well as mostly just focus on kickass sea battles instead of hokey moé-isms) and came out pretty decent because of it. Oh well, either way, depending on how good your Japanese is there's always the fan comics, especially Deco's, Ro's, and Mura-no-Machi's ongoing series (interestingly nearly all the best Kancolle stories are by women fans like these three lol). It'd be cool to translate Deco's at the very least but I'm not sure if the anglophone audience is there.

@@soukingdom I've seen hundreds of anime, it's hardly garbage, it's one of the better anime adaptions of a mobile game. It's not the best thing I've ever watched, I've seen a lot of great anime, but it's pretty decent for what it is, hell it even made me cry a little given it's context. It actively inspired me to look into naval history, and with that background the premise, concept and themes of the game is surprisingly interesting and you can do a ton with it. There's plenty of great fan work that isn't just lewding the girls. If people are still making fan work to this day (for 11 years), there's something good going for it.
