I do agree with others that these tests don't do a whole lot except test which unit gets a fix and gets it faster. You really do need to add coordinate and elevation checks from both units against "known" values or at least each unit observing the same point 3 or more times (hours apart) and averaging the results. I am a Carlson BRx7 user (identical to the S631) and am impressed with where we can use them, but I have seen them obtain a blown shot a time or two - not often, but it happens. I've always been curious on the various "flavors" of this receiver and if they are all the same. If you search eBay you'll see identical receivers for much much less cost from the likes of Unistrong, Stonex, E-Survey, Qianxun, etc.

Hi Garry, you are right about the repeatability being the true indicator. I'll link our repeatability video again here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5i9pqqBqN2AiKc. You can check out my comment to Niko, I am planning to do a more in depth repeatability video. It is logistically a bit of a chore, so there are some things I need to figure out first. (It is near the top of my list I promise, I am just very busy behind the scenes on a lot of other projects this year. We have completely revamped our support site at Survey-Assistant.com and that has been a lot of my time). For your Carlson unit (you are correct, Carlson takes the S631 and paints it blue) you can try enabling Hemisphere SureFix (if you have not already). This should eliminate any blown shots as it runs two units in parallel. (There should be an option in the Receiver tab in Carlson if I remember correctly, you can enable it like this in FieldGenius: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGnZkmyubMumgsk) As for the other receivers, eSurvey, Unistrong and Stonex (I have not dealt with Qianxun, probably a similar story from my reading) they are all owned by the Unistrong parent company. Unistrong used to own Hemisphere, and these receivers all (about 2-3 years ago now) used a Hemisphere board. However with the CHIP act in the USA, Hemisphere was forced to be sold and is now owned by Case New Holland. The enclosure is the same, but eSurvey, Unistrong and Stonex do not have access to the Hemisphere RTK board anymore and use a Chinese board. They all use a Chinese Unicor board. I have done some limited testing on this board, it seems to be decent but I cannot comment on any repeatability (not enough time on the receiver, and some interesting results in my admittedly limited testing) or reliability (simply have not used and do not have any customers with those units). Let me know if you have anymore questions, Nolan

These tests do not prove anything. Maybe only that hemisphere algorithm is more "relaxed" compared to Trimble, Leica, etc. Also, your repeatability test took place in no-so-difficult places. A true repeatability test will include a tightly adjusted total station network and measurements in different hours and days. Also please make a test with another Chinese receiver,. Let's say alpha geo which is also located in Canada and costs less than the hemisphere.

Hi Nikouer, we have lots of customers who have taken the S631 against the R12i and more receivers and had equal if not better repeatability in heavy canopy on the West Coast and SE US. We are always trying to get more receivers in, so I will add that to the list! The locations we selected for the repeatability test look less daunting on camera than they actually are but we have moved to these new locations in this video to increase the difficulty on the receivers. As for the repeatability tests, we have done a lot of independent testing that we didn't show in the video as it would be pretty dry (I'm not sure anyway wants to watch me sit in a lawn chair for a couple of hours). However, it has been on my list for a while to create a more comprehensive repeatability video based on lots of requests just like yours. It is a super time intensive video with a lot of data processing (and unfortunately I don't always have as much time as I would like for these videos as I do a lot of other behind the scenes work on support and sales). We do have a new video guy and I have started talking to him about how we can film this to make it both entertaining and provide all the information you want. As for the repeatability test, we are hoping to do as you suggest, see how repeatability is over time with shots compared to total station shots. The difficulty is finding suitable locations that are difficult enough near our office and that our practical to return to over various time lengths and are in locations that are actually difficult. The locations shown in this video are about 30 minutes from our office as we have to hike in. We are working on a more comprehensive video on repeatability so keep your eyes out. Let me know if you have any questions or ideas! - Nolan

I've got no wonders if you get inside a house and get a fix solution. Do you really believe in algorithm? Under canopy, a lot of noise everywhere.... Measure coordinates with total station, then stake out with your gnss receivers and this should be your control
@benchmarkequipment
@benchmarkequipment 28 күн бұрын
Hi Furio, we have actually tested the repeatability of the solutions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5i9pqqBqN2AiKc I am unaware of any RTK receiver that can get a fix indoors, but you are correct there is a lot of noise under canopy. That is why it is important to have a receiver that can filter out that noise. The latest RTK, whether it be Trimble or Hemisphere is definitely capable of achieving accurate and reliable results under canopy. That being said taking proper control measurements and checking your data is always recommended.

biased test, conditions are different for both receivers, software is not the same for both receivers, software settings unknown, software not from the manufacturer, constellations settings unknown, options of the receivers unknown, ambiguity settings unknown, accuracy unknown, ranges of the RMS unknown, misleading information.
@benchmarkequipment
@benchmarkequipment Ай бұрын
Hi Jrr, not sure I completely agree with this comment. We do our best to provide the same conditions for the receivers. To do this we place our pole stand in the same location and place the receiver in the same hole on the stand. We do the tests back to back to ensure that this is the case and that any satellite change is minimized. We also use a base and rover setup with the same make and model as the base to give the receiver the best possible conditions. Both bases are set next to each other so there is no advantage there. Software has almost nothing to do with the fix time of the receivers. All RTK receivers compute a position on board the receiver, and transmit (in most cases over bluetooth) the position. The software does no computation towards the fix. It simply takes the reported lat and long position and translates it to the relevant coordinate system. On top of this, FieldGenius is not OEM software by Hemisphere. It is a third party company, much in the same way Carlson is a third party software company. As for accuracy and RMS values, in an effort to keep this videos shorter (I would love to make them longer and more in depth, but people don't watch that content and they are extremely time intensive to create) so we don't dive into the values here. However we did film a separate video on the accuracy and repeatability where we did do more of that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5i9pqqBqN2AiKcsi=DD4lx8Wq7pOnad9g. We have also done this test with many other receivers! Take a look here: kzbin.info/aero/PL-OAlKspUpSOWzetK0tAvypK6fOP_YuPb Let me know if you have anymore questions, or have any suggestions on how you think we can change the test! It can be a little hard to show the background work we do before the video to make the tests as fair as possible, and we have found most people simply aren't interested. Also feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Can you talk about the rumors of these canopy capable GNSS chinese receivers that report FALSE FIXES? Compared to Trimble and Javad that do not? Maybe a video proving these are as good as those?
@benchmarkequipment
@benchmarkequipment 2 ай бұрын
Hi Tim, At the end of the day any receiver is capable of producing faulty fixes, including Trimble and Javad. This is why at the end of the day, the best tool a surveyor has is their own brain. As good as the modern receivers are, just like any instrument or technology you have to know the short comings and how to mitigate them (Might be a video we are starting to work on...). Javad and Hemisphere (others do as well), allow you to use multiple independent and unique RTK engines to significantly reduce the odds of a false fix occurring and is something I would personally recommend in a receiver. We have done some testing of receivers from China, including Unicor boarded receivers, CHC, Emlid and Stonex units. A lot of these units will use older Trimble or NovaTel (Leica) boards, and perform as you'd expect. The new Chinese boards can definitely perform well in certain conditions, but we have seen some odd results. I haven't done enough testing myself to conclusively say one way or the other if they are bullet proof or suspect, your mileage may vary. I won't name any manufacturers directly, but I would personally recommend staying away from the ultra low cost units, at least for the time being, especially for legal applications (if you are going to use them at least ensure you do take care and double check your results). I won't claim people haven't been able to achieve great results with units like this, they most certainly have, but really look into who is backing up and guaranteeing the technology behind the board. As for Trimble, we have done some comparison videos to both the R12i and R10. I haven't had a Javad come through the shop, although we have had some of our customers swap their Javad's for Hemisphere units. I haven't heard any complaints about performance when comparing the Javad and Hemisphere units, with the general consensus being the Hemisphere is easier to use for their crews. Hi Gold, Not sure if you purchased from us, but I typically don't recommend upgrading from Windows at this time especially for full blown land surveying. It is tough, as there a lot of awesome android data collectors out there. The good news is they are updating it quickly but I don't have a timeline on that feature. I know they are working on adding math operations in fields (X..Y - 90 etc.) but I have no timeline.
