Great job, this is my first time catching one of your videos, and your teaching style is spot on.

What it sounds to me at the end of the chorus is, you position your fingers for the D chord, but add the sus4, then during the last 2 measures of the chorus, you play the Sus4, then lift the middle and pinky, then press down again the middle finger to make it a D major again. Sounds good to my ears.

Way to nitpick things normal people listening to the cover band don’t care about… that also don’t alter the song to most listeners.

Hands down best tutorial on this song. Detailed but not laborious. Perfect. Thanks so much. A lot of bad tutorials floating out there on this one. Happy to finally land on this. PS: is it just me who's brain goes numb when people do the up up down stuff or the count to try to teach strum patterns...I can only ever get strum by feel. Lol
@RealWorldGuitar9 ай бұрын
Thanks man! And I hear you on the rhythm thing - I think to truly internalize something, you definitely have to "feel it," but there's a lot of value in getting comfortable with the counting/understanding of rhythm too - they go hand in hand!

Always loved the swing of the very beginning part of Section 4 in Marty's solo soo cool sounding!

Great video. Before I saw your video, I had to figure out that slide to an open D (using the C shape) myself instead of that dumb hammer-on part that everyone plays wrong. There are even people giving lessons on youtube teaching it with the hammer-on method that sounds so wrong.
@danielblake153710 ай бұрын
I play it a little differently than you, but i took some of the parts you play different and used some of those ways instead of the way I originally played it because its easier but like that appeggio the high E string 12th fret to 7th fret... 2nd, 3rd and 4th string all 9th fret instead of taking the last note of that down to 2nd fret.
@godsmacking9910 ай бұрын
The main riff sounds close but everything else just doesn't sound right in standard. The chorus for example, John does a whole walk-up thing that you just can't replicate in standard because you don't have the open strings at your disposal. Instead you just play boring regular D and Dsus chords there to compensate, it's just not the same though. Call me a stickler but you gotta play it in the original tuning or what's the point? Why play something 80% right when you can easily play it near 100% just by playing it in the right tuning? Don't be lazy.
@RealWorldGuitar9 ай бұрын
Thanks for your insight, I really appreciate it! I'd love to see a video of you playing it so I can hear that walk-up more clearly too. If you've got one, feel free to share it here. Thanks!

I realize this is very old. But nevertheless im gonna try for a response to a quick question lol. Im just curious where or how you came across the tabs, or did you learn it by ear. As one of my favorite solos EVER, I've always tried learning to play it. And over the years of always listening and looking over new tabs that periodically come out, i thought i had the notes pretty much down. Except for maybe 2 or 3 of the really fast legatos and arpeggios. But in the very first section of your video i already noticed sbout 2-3 different or missing notes from my version. That's the only reason im asking about where you learned. Peace bro!
@RealWorldGuitar11 ай бұрын
Hey man - I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you! This was all done by ear. Even now listening back, I think there are a couple of tiny things I missed, but it's pretty close! What I will say, is that learning by ear is definitely something you can develop, but it's a journey for sure, and it takes lots of work. If you ever have any questions, feel free to reach out and I'll do my best to help!
@JudgeDrey11 ай бұрын
@@RealWorldGuitar Thanks for the reply. I've always learned by ear from the age of 13 until now. But with the boom of the internet, it's been way too easy to just look up tabs, or look up video tutorials. There are YT guitarists like Ben Eller who goes into such minute detail when trying to figure out a guitar part it's incredible. He slows down the track in his DAW and works through parts that way, among others. But anyways, it's not a cardinal sin to play a solo or any song your own way right? So either way, cheers on a great job! It's as awesome and face melting as anyone could ask for a Marty solo IMHO! CHEERS!
@RealWorldGuitar11 ай бұрын
@@JudgeDrey - absolutely man, on all fronts! Ben is a phenomenal musician all around. And for me, it depends on the solo, some I like to go into great detail to really nail all the nuances. Others, I'm just trying to get the basic vibe and am a lot looser with it. And like you said, it's all in what you're going for - no sin in doing it your own way!

At the start, isn't it a flat 6th in the F# major scale? It's bothering me how to describe this in theory (just because I'm trying to improve my theory side, having learnt the solo a while ago). Doesn't appear to be a mode in its own right, but just an ionian mode with a flat 6th. Hopefully it just goes to show that theory isn't that important and you just play the notes you like the sound of!
@RealWorldGuitar2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jon! It is definitely a D note in that first lick - B, C#, D, C#, so you're absolutely right about the flat 6th. The only thing I'd say is that I feel like this is more of a minor key center, so although there are some other notes at times, we're working out of F# minor (or Aeolian), so it'd be F# G# A B C# D E. Let me know if that makes sense!
@jonmarklar82282 жыл бұрын
@@RealWorldGuitar That makes way more sense, thanks! Don't know why I thought it was a major scale. Great to see videos where the theory is explained. Keep up the good work!
