@@ThreeBooleans It's on a left hand turn. The idea is to move the car near the curb when you turn right to prevent bicycle/mopeds from entering your blind spot and then you hitting them on the turn. If you are going straight or turning right stay middle.

That is only if you do driving school. There is an option that if you do a certain amount of driving school, you can get your Japanese Driver's License at the end. However, it is 300,000 yen. I am currently trying to past my practical driving test. It is 2,200 yen each time I take it and an additional 2,500 yen for the actual license. This does not include all the money I had to pay to translate paperwork and take the written test, plus you can take driving lessons of about an hour which is an additional 5,000yen. Of course, these are the costs in my prefecture. I'm not sure about other prefectures. Hope that helps. :)

Actually I had a same thought when I watched this video, and found out this video, his way is all correct. If you know you need to go right in short way, you can go into the right lane as video. I checked with my teacher at driving center, and this way all correct.
