This tank/video is what got me back in the hobby. I dove in head first wasted a bunch of money on a big name tank with a sump and all the equipment. Failed miserably. Multiple times. So I went to the local pet co got a 40 gal tank, a marineland emperor pro filter and started over. Huge success! Had to break the tank down so I could move. Had about a 8 month break from the hobby. Making water tonight to get back in again. Same ol 40 breeder same filter….different light this time. Orphek Atlantik icon…way over kill but I want to try acros this time!

That’s awesome. Great story. I have see too many people drop hundreds if not thousands and just struggle and quit. Sometimes keeping it simple and maybe slowly upgrade here and there is the best way. Good luck

I moved to Southern California from Florida over a year ago (tired of hurricanes) and gave away four of my five tanks and all my fish and plants. So stressful trying to keep my fish alive during power outages. I have one empty 55 acrylic that I’m hanging onto. Your 40 gallon saltwater tank has been an inspiration to me to go saltwater. I understand completely how it’s difficult to find the time to enjoy your tanks when family and life takes up all of your time. Hobbies aren’t fun when they become a chore. That said, I’m hanging onto to my last tank until I find the time to set it up. I do miss your planted tanks as they were amazing.

You ou say the seals can’t last forever (a long time) and I have heard people say that but I have many tanks that still have good seals after >34 years. Most of those are just standard 50g, 20g, 10g retail tanks. Nothing special. I have a few I made and those too ard fine decades later.

Hi Mike! I just found your content and this particular tank was appealing to me because I just started a 40B mixed reef tank myself with an Aquaclear HOB. Would love to know more about your setup, what light you’re using, what corals, etc. Mine is heavy softy and LPS with a couple SPS. I didn’t see a list with all of your videos about this tank and I didn’t see a way to search. Looking forward to diving into your planted aquarium content, also as I have a 75 gallon planted community tank and a 16 gallon cube planted tank with neocarodinia and Vietnamese cloud minnows.
