I remember back in ye olden youtube days, someone took those plastic wheels and put them on the Racers Power Functions RC chassis to build a motorized drift car... which actually worked pretty well! I always was curious about this set, but assumed it had a pull-back motor. I tried to build similar vehicles that way since I had the plastic wheels from another set, but pull-back motors didn't work well for that - they just exhausted their energy too quickly. From your demonstration, I think the best way to use it would be to roll the car with the wheels pointed straight first - with limited traction it would take time to build up speed, but eventually the wheels would be spinning much faster than you can achieve with just your fingers. Then turn the wheels and watch it do donuts!
@jackbackln443213 күн бұрын
Cool! That sounds fun! And yeah, the instructions do suggest that, but I found you'd really need a carpet or something similar since it doesn't get any grip on a hard surface, so you wouldn't get the wheels spinning at all
@Thinginator14 күн бұрын
Was always curious about this set and the Fire Spinner as a kid, never realized they had inertia motors though! Surprisingly, this is DESPITE the fact that I actually have an inertia motor! Ordered one on Bricklink a while back, and for whatever reason never looked up what sets it came from lol. Just kinda assumed it was from a Basic set or one of those Technic add-on sets I guess? In any case, I wish they used the inertia motor more, it's fantastically useful. Since it doesn't have insane torque off the line, you can use whatever size wheels or bodywork you want, making it much more versatile in its uses. I've built experimental Speed Champions scale chassis with it - not with complete bodywork, as I couldn't settle on a particular vehicle to build (it'd have to be a hatchback, van, or wagon due to the height of the motor), but complete enough to play around with and see that it works. I'm currently using the inertia motor as part of an Aquazone MOC of all things, a tracked ocean-floor rover, with the inertia motor allowing the rover to keep crawling forward after being pushed - something tracked vehicle models don't ordinarily do very well. It'll even climb over small obstacles! Very fun. Even in non-wheeled/tracked machines, having something that keeps spinning long after you've stopped cranking the mechanism is super useful. Imagine an airplane or helicopter moc where the rotors/propellers keep spinning long after you've stopped spinning them. Or wings of a brick-built creature continuing to flap. The applications are endless, making this a truly overlooked yet wonderful LEGO element!
@jackbackln443213 күн бұрын
Ooh, that's really smart! A tracked vehicle with the inertia motor sounds fantastic! And yeah, maybe I should have an inertia motor for my Underground Mining Station, I've got a big Power Miners display and have been debating how to motorize that particular set.

I had this set as a kid! I do distinctly remember the box having cut lines on it - I believe the intent was that you were to cut the box in half diagonally, creating a triangular wedge you could use as a ramp for the truck.

Oh, that's really interesting! That's not something that's seen at all on images online, so thanks for mentioning it! I recall a similar thing was suggested for 2012's racers monster trucks.
@Thinginator16 күн бұрын
@@jackbackln4432 On second thought, maybe the 2012 monster truck boxes are actually what I remember... It just made sense in my mind for this one to have a box you're meant to cut. I did also have one of those 2012 monster trucks, IMO they were a somewhat disappointing way for Racers to end. As a kid, I just used upside-down baseplates as ramps since you could stack however many bricks you wanted to adjust the ramp's angle.

Strangely, this was one of the sets my dad had when I was a kid... and he never takes his sets apart, so his copy is still put together to this day, collecting dust on a shelf in a storage room. However, at some point, as a kid I swapped the positions of some of the stickers for whatever reason. I may or may not have put the STAMP sticker on top of the two stickered 1x4 tiles... If that's not the most cursed variety of STAMP, I don't know what is...

I miss when LEGO would make Technic-based sets that weren't even part of the Technic line. I dig that percentage bar for the piece count between alternate builds! I skipped this one in my youth but maybe if it had more regular green, it would have been more appealing (that is my favorite shade of green after all). But bias aside it would have balanced the set better cosmetically on multiple angles. The wheelie kick on the back is a neat alternate feature I didn't expect.

Something about this set speaks to me, which is funny because I owned this set in my childhood and didn't think much of the name back then... Long after taking apart this set, I would periodically come across it's stickered and printed pieces in bins and forgot they went to this racer. Some cool designs all around. But my grip is the use of the antenna bar element inside a modified plate with hole on each side; I had a bad history of bar elements getting stuck from time to time, needing brute force (and dentistry) to pry them apart. There's a Dino Attack buggy set that reminds me of this as well with a lightsaber blade bar piece. While sturdy and technically a legal connection, I would opt for something less rigid like a plate with horizontal clip on the end, or a looser bar varying on the age of the pieces.
