No, it's not so much that Ukraine was going through something, more Erin being an idiot. She's got a good heart but she can act a bit superior at times. And a huge part of the "troubles" was religious. Catholics that wanted Northern Ireland to be part of the Republic of Ireland fighting Protestants that wanted to remain part of the UK.

@Shoomer1988 🤣 Erin does love acting a fool, doesn't she. But aren't both of those Christians, so in essence, Katya had a point then with the whole two different flavors of the same religion thing 🤔.

❤ I really like your reactions to Derry Girls. Da Gerry and James are like the normal people in this series, and them being the odd ones out is because they're normal amongst the madness of the other characters, although James does have his moments. 😂 Erin has delusions of grandeur and has prejudices, and there will be many times in the show where these come to the fore, but she WILL learn and grow from these experiences. The prejudices Erin, her family and others in the show have are played for laughs because they really are absurd. Katya is like Gerry and James as a kind of stand in for the audience. "She is HOT and you are not dead".😂 I loved this line and the actress' delivery. Grandpa Joe does love Gerry really, but he sees himself as the family patriarch who has to put the young'un in his place. When he tells Gerry to "piss off" his words are dismissive, but his voice holds affection. I always think "poor Gerry", but there is a lot of love in this family when it comes down to it. ❤

I don't think Grandda actually hates Jerry, despite all evidence to the contrary. He's overprotective of his daughters & granddaughters, and wants to keep Jerry on his toes 😅. It's always made me wonder about the absence of Orla's dad, and if maybe Joe was a little nicer to Jerry before whoever he is disappeared 🤔

Thanks to the history teachers, who were sent to gulags in Siberia. They were such great story tellers of their own experiences it really helped to be more curious about others history. Sinead also was a very rebellious soul. She reminds me of soo many middle aged people who rebelled against USSR in the 80s in my country leading to the Singing Revolution. PS! The privileged part of town (top side) is referred to as Piltover. On the other side of the river is the sunken city of iron and glass: Zaun. The area where Vi and the gang are ambushed by Deckard and his goons is known as the Promenade. The elevator took them down to the main level of Zaun called the Entresol (because the sunlight only just enters through). And underneath is known as the Sump (the most depressing part of the city). Zaun is also nicknamed "The Lanes" or "the Fissures". Originally, Piltover and Zaun were one whole, equal, level city, just named Zaun. Until the mines collapsed and sent half the city underground. Piltover is a play on words for built over top the lanes.

Orla is definitely a bit aloof and not on drugs but i assume she’s neurodivergent and just sort of living in her own world most of the time. They’re all fun characters but I definitely have a soft spot for orla and all of the shit she does in the background of various scenes. And they shit on James a lot but I just love the Irish accents and culture and banter and insults. It’s such a fun show. And taught me a bit more about the colonialism of Ireland by England.

Love your reactions! Just wanted to add that the reason it's so important it's set in Derry is that Derry is right on the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, so a lot of attacks were happening there and the characters have to cross the border all the time. The official name of Derry from the UK side is Londonderry, but the culturally Irish Catholic characters call it Derry - you can see someone spraypainting black over the 'London' part of the sign in some of the intros!

Quick History/Context dump for the show: England colonised Ireland for over 600 years and was a very big factor/cause of An Gorta Mór (The Irish Famine) that wiped out a quarter of our population, which only recovered in the last few years! Lots of tragedies and violence committed, it’s also why the characters and Irish people in real life are speaking English (speaking Irish was persecuted and banned). We gained independence after centuries of failed attempts in 1921 but a chunk of the north remained a part of the United Kingdom. At the time the show is set, it’s in the midsts of The Troubles, a period where that chunk known as Northern Ireland was divided in a bloody civil war between paramilitaries of people who wanted to stay a part of the UK (typically Protestants called Unionists) and who wanted to rejoin Ireland (typically Catholics called Nationalists). Hatred against the English was quite a justified anger, but over the past years it’s died down to kinda just bitterness and jabs here and there. So the Irish vs English had beef, and the Catholics vs Protestants as well :) Great reaction video

Derry Girls is an absolutely fantastic show, really illustrating teenage life in the 1990's- and in particular in Northern Ireland. What I find a little odd is that many reactors not from the UK seem to totally ignore the fact that the episode opens with terrorists blowing up the bridge they all need to cross to get into town, that the school bus is boarded by British soldiers looking for more bombs/ potential terrorists, and that Claire's dad is late to the parents meeting because he was delayed while the authorities defused a second actual bomb. In the second episode- Uncle Colm was tied up by terrorists wanting to steal his van potentially to transport arms or bomb making equipment across the border. The fact that all these things are happening around them on a daily basis, and yet they just carry on their normal lives is an important aspect of this series.

Little Lord Tully has obviously had enough of Daemon's BS. Possibly going through the death of a beloved grandfather, the same grandfather that Daemon urged him to murder a few weeks before his time, and the weight of the sudden Lord Paramountcy, has toughened the kid. Perhaps the reason why Addam doesn't reveal to Rhaenyra that he is Corlys' son is that Corlys has never acknowledged that Addam and Alyn are his sons; so there would be mutual embarrassment. By custom, it would be up to Corlys to acknowledge the revelation.
