Have you wrapped your plants in plastic before? I was just watching some videos from a guy who was saying that's actually bad for plants, you might want to look more into that? @@brocktoon8 thanks for watching and commenting 👊😎 i dont generally wrap them in plastic , i use horticultural fleece and straw for the most part but i do use plastic or something waterproof over the top of the protection to keep water out and as dry as possible but leave at least 1/3 at the bottom as just fleece and straw so it can breathe if that makes sense as air flow is important too. generally i find its the moisture that kills plants rather than the cold if that makes sense🤔🤷‍♂️ im hoping the blue fern does make it through id love to have it all over the garden haha 🤷‍♂️🌴😎

Well, if snow happened here, in Atlanta, this time of the year, the locals would go nuts, and the city would be shut down for the day! This would happen any time during the winter. We have no snow plows, except for the airport. Atlanta is still waiting for a frost, killing or otherwise. 35 is the low for a few nights Thursday/Friday, and if it doesn't happen this week, it will be after December 3, according to the long-range forecast. All fine and well by me.

Certainly wirh tropical style gardening you can rarely just go into a garden centre and pick up these kinds of plants - unless you live near a specialist one. If its a UK seller and they are UK grown then lilely online is pretty good option. If the plants have been force grown in a poly tunnel in Italy then they may not be hardy and often are narrow trunked and stretched etc. Definitely a bit of a minefield. Did i spot a Washingtonia in your garden? If so is that staying out? Pool is looking cool - serious man hours going into that!

@@richf_tropical_garden_projects I watch with anticipation as I really like washies but I lost two in the winter of Dec 2022 - which granted was a bad one vs previous years. What variety of Yucca's do you grow, as apparently some species prefer to be kept dry over winter as the combination of cold & wet can cause them to rot! Find the variegated cultivars to be less cold hardy. On west coast of Scotland so certainly rains here! 🌧🌧😂 good advice on the bananas got a pot grown one use the exact same method as you, some bamboo canes & chicken wire fir a cage around it, im 5ft 10" & can literally stand underneath it 😯😎

I just put a hedychium greenii (purple ginger) in amongst rocks and looks great against them for near small dicksonia. By pool of course I'm going to recommend ferns, if shady the polystichum setiferum, they are easy and big, if gets some sun then dryopteris will work.

You can try 3 plants but don't arrange them in a linear fashion, stagger then in a pattern like, X X X
@DavidThompson-i8c
@DavidThompson-i8c 14 күн бұрын
The pattern can be flipped or reversed. The idea is that the eye is drawn to the two close together and then gets a surprise when it sees a third one over there.
@DavidThompson-i8c
@DavidThompson-i8c 14 күн бұрын
Try grouping the two around a plam near the edge and then the other a couple of feet further away. The moss can be arranged thus way, and any focal plants could be set this way with the lower plants filling in in a similar manner. In Atlanta, that would be called the Post Properties style of landscaping.

@richf_tropical_garden_projects my reply is yes, it could work. The only way you are going to know is to try it out. Now, maybe hardy bromiliads are out of the question, but try something that is similar. I also say this. This is your garden, and no matter what someone else says, you should enjoy what you see is pleasing to you. I dont know your experience level, but you are making something that combines your passions for several things, golf, tropicals and palms, water features, and swimming. I also believe you have mentioned you have a child with special needs. So I'm throwing you a suggestion from way over the pond and could be totally contrary to your vision.

What about Bromeliads? Like the genus Dyckia, like the well-known Matchstick and another called Queen's Tears of the genus Aqua. Normally those with thicker leaves are found to be more cold hardy. Back in the 70s, a fad on this side of the pond was pet rocks 🪨. Someone had the idea to put a small rock in a box with care instructions and sell it for about $6.00 USD. @richf_tropical_garden_project I don't know why but looking at your rocks made me think of that. They were $3.85 back they by the way, not $6.00. That equates to about $24.00 today. Inflation!
