I replaced the 250W HP PSU in my Elitedesk 800 G4 with a generic 400W PSU with two 4-pins, two 6+2-pin GPU, and a 7 pin connector with only 3 wires. It worked, but after re-start it seems some BIOS security feature (HP Sure Start?) is detecting non-HP hardware and preventing boot-up. It just hangs at the "Protected by HP Sure Start" screen. Anyone know what I can disable in BIOS to get it to accept non-HP hardware? Or is that what the PSU_ID pin is for maybe?

Has anyone had problems with the PSU running power for the PC and its components while the PC is turned off? Say for example, power being fed to the GPU while the computer itself is off? To me it would seem that there is a good chance that if a power surge of somekind happends, the PSU would not be able to save components from frying when the pins:"power on" and "ground" are connected. I might be wrong though any help is appriciated!

My brother has an M01-F1055na with the same(?) 7-pin PWRCMD P2 cable, and wants an upgrade to a new 600W PSU for a 3060 Ti. I think I'm starting to make sense of it, but... from what I can tell you have to wire the P2 cable to a 24-pin ATX cable and plug that into a power supply? I think he's got just 1 4-pin, which starts at 8-pin in the HP PSU. Annoying. I see lots of 24-pin ATX to 6-pin PWRCMD adapters on Amazon, could it be possible to convert a 7-pin to a 6-pin and make that work? Aggravating that it's this ridiculous but here we are I suppose. I have a multimeter (but no idea where to check) so I'm not sure.

Thanks. I was gifted a broken 10th gen i7 HP desktop. I got it working, but my investigation showed that the PSU was not adequate to supply the necessary current to the stock configuration under heavy loads. A 180 watt PSU in a system whose CPU can draw 227 watts! The voltage drop was sufficient to destroy several onboard components. I have zero desire to gift HP with the money for an upgraded power supply to fix a problem that they purposely (seemingly) create. I am still looking for an aftermarket supply with the correct pinout, but I would probably be better off following your procedure. At least then, when the computer dies, I might be able to salvage the PSU. Again, thanks.

@@fixandtech I7 -10700. While the processor TDP is 65 watts or so, set by PL1, it has the ability for PL2 to override PL1, and run at 224 watts without being overclocked. I believe that the PL2 setting can last longer than the cheap power supply can compensate for and it allows the voltage to drop enough to damage some of the components. This is partly speculation and the system is old enough that I doubt anyone who knows more than I will investigate deeply enough to prove me right or wrong. For me, personally, it's easier to upgrade the PSU.

Hi, thank you for good solution. I've run prodesk 600 G3 sff without issues. I have 7 pin with 5 wires where only grey (pwr good) and black (gnd) is necessary to start. As there still no solution to run ATX PSU in regular way (using 5v standby) we need to keep it running (keep connected pwr-on to gnd) before power button on motherboard is pressed. As today mostly all ATX has a switch there is not necessary to add extra one (but it is definitely cool :) ) To make process more convenient i bought special cable "24Pin to 6Pin Connector for HP Elite 8100 8200 8300" from aliexpress. It has 2 connectors: 6pin power and 6 pin data. From 6 pin connector we need to connect only 4 pins (black and yellow). In general it has: 2 yellow (+12v), 2 black(GND), standby +12v and -12v. From data 6pin we need all 4 wires which are: gnd,gnd,pwr-good,pwr-on leaded to 24pin connector. I use jumper wire (like for breadbord ) to connect pwr-on to gnd. But to connect to mobo i had to cut 7 pin from stock PSU and solder grey and black to jumper wires which makes it very convenient to plug them into 6 pin data leads (gnd and pwr-good). P.S. motherboard has non standard holes layout which doesn't fit regular ATX cases. To flip the case it is easier to disassemble stock case and install it's support stamped backplate to regular case using screws or rivets. I also soldered connector to mobo's power button and connected it to the case's power button. P.P.S Case fans will run when PSU is on. To prevent it they need to be connected to sata power on mobo directly or use a relay to commute +12v from PSU to FANs. I use 5v arduino relay module which takes 5v and gnd from CD-rom cable. Here is my solution of standby mode without switch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmHRi5R9gZ6fjqssi=duGxxt1yVeJrIpv0

I just did this on an HP envy desktop! (like literally just now so I guess TBD whether it stays stable...) My HP had a 7-pin PWRCMD plug with only three of the pins in use; green black and grey on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th pins. I assumed that green was pwr on, black was gnd, and grey was pwr good. I hotwired from the ATX motherboard plug on the PSU to connect the PSU pwr on, PSU gnd, and PWRCMD gnd together, then I connected pwr good from the PSU to the pwr good from PWRCMD (just like in the video). I didn't use a switch at all. I just wired those pins to each other, ran power to the two 4-pin 12V CPU connectors on the motherboard from one of the 8-pin PCIe spots on the new PSU, and it all works great! I just turn the PC on and off with the stock power button on the front. It seems to power all the way down and then all the way up again without issue. I do have an external power switch on the PSU if I want it, but so far it seems like I might not need it. I'm using a Corsair 750W SFX PSU. Thanks so much for the info in this video! Fingers crossed my system stays happy!

I am doing some designing for my own machine. I think we can solve the 12V standby by using a step-up converter to the ATX 5V output, and then connect it to the 4pin 12V pins with diodes just as a precaution to not let power get from the main 12V back to the standby circuits. We just have to increase the step-up V for the diode drop voltage, and make sure the converter and diodes are rated high enough to handle the current. I am also not sure why the psu was cycling when you connected the power-on wire directly to the motherboard. Was it doing the 5sec force-shutdown thing? Or was it releasing the pin from ground after a while?

Is there any difference between 12v stand-by and regular 12v when on in terms of signal? Thanks a lot for this tutorial btw. I was thinking of doing this but I wasn't keen on being the first guinea pig to try.
@fixandtech Жыл бұрын
This is just DC so no difference in signal. Normally an ATX PSU can supply very little current to the standby line. Can't remember anymore did the original non-standard PSU state anything about the maximum current rating in standby mode. Probably it cannot deliver much in that state and the motherboard is commanding the PSU to "wake up" when the power button is pressed. Anyways, with this modification it won't matter, since the motherboard only takes the power it needs, whether the motherboard is on standby mode or powered on. It does no harm to have the PSU already "awake" when you press the motherboard's power button.
