Showcases a lens for the next century, demoes it in 4:3 :P (yeah i know this was meant to be watched on a typical tv at the time)

Well, it's marketed as 'HDTV compatible' in this video, so the 4:3 aspect ratio isn't that strange. Nowadays, they would not mention 'compatible' but use SD and HD. Most likely, this lens was predominantly used in the SD-field, while it was 'prepared' for HD-work as well.

These lenses have been around for years

@@markurban9113 Yes, box lenses are around for decades already. But the HD-revolution sure as hell called for far greater precision in the manufacturing process of a lens, be it an ENG or box-lens. But as the world was also switchting (in Europe at least) from 4:3 to a 16:9 aspect ratio, having lenses that worked well in the SD field as well as being 'prepared' for HDTV was very normal. Many ENG lenses even featured extra 'switchable' lens-elements, to alter the lens' optimal performance between use on a 4:3 or 16:9 ratio camera.

As far as I can see, the cameras are Sony HDC 900, which are 1920 x 1080, so HD, but this is mastered in 4:3 SD and uploaded in awful quality and with a lot of compression...
