Not a big fan of the book (mostly because it is unfinished). However, I do agree that Kafka did a good job at world-building. You could definitely imagine K’s environment well but it never seemed clear that he was aiming for a dystopia.

Just finished and it was a quick, fun listen. I will say Heinlein nailed the idea of computer aided drafting.

I agree with what a lot of people are saying. Don't expect this book to wow. It's more subtle. I didn't know anything about it when i first read it and was confused and kind of bored for the first part but don't put a lot of stress on it and things start fitting together as the story progresses.

I don't agree. It's a homage to selfishness, stupidity, egocentrism, most of the characters made me sick, especially Dua, Odeen and Tritt. "Above all else, ME!" My quotes.

it is a complex book specially if you are new to the genre (magical realism), the time is not linear and many things aren't just logical, when I readed it I tried to make sure to have no distractions because it was very easy (for me) to miss out important details.

I have read a lot of Sea stories over the years, but I never got around to this one. Now that the School bells ring today, and the kids are back in school, I started reading the Penguin Classics edition of TYBTM as a self given reading assignment. Sam, Your good review of this book was very instrumental in me deciding which book I read next. Thank you for that. 📚📖 ⚓ ⛵😊👍💯

Hey Sam @samuelpedro4972 (long time watcher, first time commenter) we were wondering if you would be interested in reading the world atlas we wrote? (If not yeah I get it, I might not respond to a random comment in my comment section either ) Our atlas is called "The World A Comprehensive Guide to Geopolitics" It has breakdowns for over 1,400 geographic regions covered. Every continent, every UN member, every partially recognized nation (Taiwan, Kosovo, Palestine etc.), every autonomous region, every external territory. We even included breakdowns for every known base camp in Antarctica, by both summer and winter populations. It has over 440 colorized maps. And over 490 colorized flags. And we even included a geography section full of facts such as the largest rivers, lakes, deserts, the lowest elevations, highest altitudes, longest mountain ranges, most northerly and southerly nations just to name a few. It took us almost 2 years to make. I'm proud of it. We finally published on June 12, 2024. Almost 2 and a half months ago. Either way...love your channel man, keep up the great work!

I think you were too focussed on the plot. To me the book was not much about the plot but more about the vibe and giving in to the world that Marquez built for us... I went in without much expectation, and I didn't even know what I was getting into but I enjoyed the process of reading it.

I was given this book when I first moved to rural Kumamoto by the 1st english teacher ever to live there. I couldn't put it down. Really enhanced my time there. Made it to the very tip of Kagoshima to camp (further south than the Sata lighthouse) and visited Sata misaki lighthouse point all the time. What a friggin sunset. Unfortunately Nagano was the furthest north I ever got. Rural Japan for the win.

Because the book can be slow and contains a lot of narration that is really important to the story but not fun to read, I went by chapters, so I didn't get overwhelmed. The book to me is about the passage of time which isn't the most fun or exciting thing. But seeing the characters change throughout time and the city change is entertaining. There were times that I hated the characters. I think once you relate it to how people change and how the world changes its pretty cool. You see people make decisions that you didn't expect. I gained a hate/love relationship with the characters which surprising made me like the book. There was a time I was so angry at a character that a contemplated how I was going to finish this stupid book and then after reading more realized that the author might have intended the reader to feel that way. Characters can meet a telenovela end and you'd be surprised how you feel about a character you loved or hated when they do meet that end. The author does a nice job guiding the reader rather than the actual story to me.
