Have you read Liminal Horror RPG? It's a Cairn hack. I dig the rules.

I cannot believe I only recently found your game company. I also cannot believe that there is finally a game company out there that has gone beyond some homebrewed rules for a Gunslinger / Dark Tower type game. I just ordered a copy of We Deal in Lead and I am eagerly awaiting the release of this new product which apparently is a love letter to the role-playing community in the form of an adaptation or role-playing version of Chris Carter's excellent but largely unknown detective series. I still cannot believe at this point how many people I run into or talk to that are not familiar at all with the Millennium series with Lance Henriksen.

The thing that I think odd with the scars system in Cairn is that you take a scar before you take any damage... which just seems counterintuitive to me. Also, the maker of Cairn has said on discord that he has run 100 games of Cairn and only had people get scars 10 times in 100 games. Because I am using Cairn for one shots, I'm inclined to let people roll on the scars table when they take a critical hit, whether they succeed on their critical hit roll or not... so that players can experience some growth a little more often. Maybe it will turn out to be too often, but we'll see. Cairn is a great starting place for an easy fast paced homebrew game.

Hey, I just brought this game but would just like to know are excursions and hex travelling separate, as in using rations, time spent in excursions, these two factors are not taken into account when on a excursion. So for example, would hex travelling be used when travelling TO an excursion, sorry if this doesn't make sense lol😂
@byodinsbeardrpg3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I see them as separate modes. You'd use the wilderness rules when travelling to a destination/excursion but then normally account for time when at the destination. Thanks!

I want to start playing with Cairn, but I'm a noob warden, and not really sure how it works. When I play this game with friends, do I just flip the book from the first page to the last page? Is there a video of someone playing this with the cairn system?
@byodinsbeardrpg6 ай бұрын
So there's no video of a HOWL playthrough, but Yochai Gal (the creator of Cairn) has an actual play video for the system Cairn, which should give you an idea of how things work: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2SxZaOnfa54rbM

So I used Cairn with Escape the City to help me, because it gave some structure, and I didn't have to like come up with too much stuff, and it helped alot. My friends really enjoyed it, we actually avoided most battles, and won at the end by freezing the main boss with a freeze spell, and was able to get out of the city. Also some very creative ways that we avoided trouble was using the piles of clothes of the bad guys to disguise our selves, and one of our PCs had a Mini Me of herself, so we used that to throw another characters whispervail, that distracted the main boss because he was easily distracted by prey, and when he was distracted I used my PC head skull thing we found earlier to freeze him! @@byodinsbeardrpg

6:35 as I understand the rules of Cairn, to get your damaged Ability Scores back, you need a week's rest!
@byodinsbeardrpg6 ай бұрын
So there are actually 3 levels of rest in Cairn: rest of a few moments with a drink of water (recovers HP), longer rest of a full night in a safe place (clears Fatigue), and a full week of rest facilitated by a healer (recovers ability damage). You're right in that my verbal explanation regarding healing ability damage was wrong and the night's rest wouldn't recover Strength. 👍

This is absolutely where I like to live in terms of games. Too much crunch is just that.. too much. D&D feels too much like the players are demigods rather than adventurers... Some of the OSR mechanics seem a bit much as well. So I really like where the NSR style design sits.

The core mechanics were designed for 2 players but the focus is still there on solo. There's a delve generator and rune-based oracle for solo play.
