Believe it or not, Booker T. played all the instruments on the original cut of this song. Eddie Floyd wrote this when he was taking a flight from England back to the states to attend Otis Redding's funeral. As the plane was going down the runway, it shut down, breaking hard and went back to the terminal. They were delayed for 5 or six hours and that's when he wrote the song. Unfortunately he missed the funeral. Taken from Soulsville USA The story of Stax Records written by Rob Bowman.

It was either Test Drive Unlimited or Test Drive Unlimited 2 that this was one of the songs on one of the radio stations. Every time I would hear "Get on up, big bird", it kind of meant to me "Get the speedometer up!" or "Get this thing flying down the highway!", just go go go. That section of the song encouraged the need for speed, and I would cycle through the stations for that exact song many times.
