It just happened to me as i warmed up my coffee water in microwave and as soon as i added my spoon in the mug to stir it juts exploded like a volcano not far away but all over my fingers and now im very much hurt. This also happens when i just boil or heat some water in the microwave and then add coffee or sugar in it, even happens with milk .

This just happened to me, it scared the shit out of me I was boiling 2 cups of water with 1/4 tsp of agar to make some jello; I boiled it clear and then took the measuring cup out and placed it on the table then got a metal chopstick to stir it, but as soon as the chopstick hit the bottom of the cup it spontaneously boiled, that really scared me.

This happens to my quite often. Maybe once a month or so. I use a regular pitcher type water filter and microwave it in my smooth glass French press. Here's my video of it happening: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnuyqaiJZbh1fsU&pp=ygURU3VwZXJoZWF0ZWQgd2F0ZXI%3D

This is exactly why I only boil water in a microwave as a last resort. And even if someone's microwaving water, I recommend doing short intervals at a time. 3 minutes' my limit, just to be on the safe side.

Microwave lies in the rotation spectra of the molecules. Super heated water is like lots and lots of small water molecules acting like rotors rotating at high velocities. So now you can imagine if you put something in rotating blades it just explodes.

My water is pretty pure and this can happen, the water company has replaced almost all of the pipes with polymer ones and does some softening though they can't do much due to leaching in some remaining old pipes. Atlanta's water is amazingly pure and it's very easy since it's very soft water. I have a high wattage, solid state powered microwave, Panasonic 1250watt and it has the rumble function which does not work to stop this. It's trivial to make this happen with tap water. Distilled is exceptionally dangerous as it can shatter the glass, tap is very dangerous as it will eject from the container. To mitigate this use a chop stick or wooden spoon or fork and a water resistant heat glove to poke it.

Yesterday I used tap water to boil n it exploded on my face unfortunately and it caused me 1st degree burns on my right side of the face. And the incident leads to this new info.

This just happened to my wife today, WITH TAP WATER😂. Between me and her over the 20 years we’ve been together and years before I’ve never seen it actually happen though I knew it was possible. When I microwave water I always have a wooden spoon (or similar) in it to break that surface tension so the water can boil while being heated. She said she didn’t know about this and why I’ve never told her. I said she’s always smarter than me and knows everything why would this be any different.😂

Just had a district manager tell me this can’t happen in a microwave. That’s why we can’t get an electric kettle to heat water at the workplace. Bozo

So I will say this: as long as you don't directly touch the steam explosion, you have a relatively low risk of being burnt. The rapid evaporation quickly removes a lot of energy from the water, so it cools to safe levels pretty fast.

I would say it rarely happens around the globe because most countries have a kettle 😂 I have only visited the US and seen people use the microwave to heat water

I am surprised at the comments claiming this is a frequent occurrence. Did it not occur to oneself the adequate heating time of water, or do they live in a cosmic anomaly? For the rest of that myth, we must go to mythbuster highschool!

This happened to me a week ago! Luckily I'd only slightly superheated it, and putting in a teabag it sizzled and popped, but I think a few more seconds and it would've been explosive 😅

Happened to me with tap water. Boiled in microwave once, forgot about it so reboiled about 20 mins later. Then when I went to pour it it began to boil like crazy

I was just microwaving water in a glass bowl to get boiling water and I heard a bang opened the door and the water was everything I’ve never never seen this before wth. And it was tap water I did reboiled it though I was using it for rising my bread in the oven so when I had to let it rise again I reboiled it

Tap water does *not* "always boil", I wish they didn't say that. This happened to me, with tap water. Fortunately, I was fine, but this can be very dangerous. Be careful boiling water in the microwave.

I've only recently heard about this and it's been scaring me but I rarely need to microwave water for longer than a MINUTE and I don't think that's enough to superheat it in most cases lol. the only cases of superheated water I'm seeing that mention time say it happened after 2+ minutes, usually 3+. I'll use the stove if I need BOILING water, but if I just need to dissolve some instant chai, I'll use the microwave.

This is so real. I had about 1.5cm of water with a little bit of peppermint extract in a mason jar. It did not boil. When I pulled it out and placed it on the counter it exploded in my face. I ended up in the hospital. 1st and 2nd degree burns to my heart face. Burnt the first layer of my Corina and burnt around the eye ball. It is real!

Just happened here Inverter microwave with rotating antenna (glass thermo cup is stationary). Kept pumping 900w into tap water that had already boiled to see what would happen and then there was really a loud explosion and all the water was thrown on the walls of the oven and the cup was empty. It was way more spectacular than I expected 😱
