Zipcord power cords aren't cheap anymore, such as is on this. They're about $7-$8, where years ago, when I was a young man in the TV repair business, you could buy them for about a dollar and in bulk lots. I wonder where all those old TV cheater cords went that were on the shelves? By the way, you can get a .02 uF ceramic at higher tolerance to go with the 200 pF mica, but since they're only using 1% resistors with them, they'll probably only be about that rating. The parts list doesn't state the tolerance of either cap. Plus, you can use a standard with these meters, like a GenRad, which are generally large mica caps, but the best you'll find is only around 0.1%.

Hi Michael, what budget RFpower amplifier do you recommend to use with the (tr)uSDX? I've heard you can get one with filters to avoid making a mess on the band but I don't know anything else about it, I think it provides an output of about 40W. Thanks. 73's. LW3EOV. M6BGG

@@ke4est no. It’s the precision. The numbers at the top, (from 88-108) aren’t as precise as the numbers right below it. For example, 106.1 looks more like 105.7 on the top bar, and 106.1 looks like 81 on the bottom bar.

I just fixed one of these myself but mine was in worse shape than yours but funny enough the Vernier pot was also stuck on mine but it was not that hard to get lose again. my 6BQ7 was cracked too and I had no replacement so I had to figure out a suitable substitute for it, all sockets were bad and a ton of resistors had drifted way past value, case had impact damage etc. I managed to find some decent schematics but in the end I just used common sense and did the work without them and it works pretty much perfect now

I usually burn the coating off with the soldering iron. When the wire is too thick I use a carpet knife. Mine ran on rx right away. However, the swr was huge. After much fiddling with the swr cores I finally found out that my load was not 50 Ohms and the bad swr was correct. The pcb material is excellent. What surprised me most was the harmonic suppression. On 80m about -48dB and then from band to band lower down to -55dB on 20m, my highest band in this rig. Thanks for your video!

Yes firmware is free, no password needed. If someone set a password you will need to get up with them. You can also flash via RS-232 if needed. You will need to contact Amiko for proper files. Unless someone is trying to use this to hack with, you will have no issues.

Top job on this & I thank you. Yes, Mr. Carlson has a lot to answer for! I saw his resto & just had to rush out in a buying frenzy... I secured the same model (same livery too) which was in excellent condition apart for a red jewel pilot lite someone fitted on the top LHS. I kinda get why they did it but it sort-of wrecks the layout balance. At least they used a proper Heathkit jewel. I also carried out the Carlson mod for the volume control.... still wondering how the designer overlooked this. Thanx again & merry Christmas:)

I found one of those at a garage sale for $10, completely made my day. Just a really nice reasonably compact piece of gear. Mine was little hinky at first, but I replaced the .1 uf bumblebee caps and it came right to life. The only shortcoming of this piece is the lack of a bias supply, but I made one on a small chassis using a backwards filament transformer running off the 12.6 volt heater supply with an 0A2 gas reg tube crammed in there and it works great. I haven't replaced the electrolytics yet, but if I do, I will do exactly what you did with the PC-mount e-caps on some terminal strips or a parts board, $10 worth of caps and back in business.

Years ago, I bought my 1st PSU - Elenco XP-625. New to electronics, I tried it on several devices as a PSU. It has killed EVERYTHING I have ever connected to it! :D 7yrs later, I'm thinking of ripping it apart to see if it was simply defective (DOA). Thx for your vid. Beware of these unfiltered/unregulated "magic smokers". Recently, I connected a ZK-4KX DC Buck Boost Converter Module to it to act as a controller, and after about 30secs, drawing no current, it blew a 470uF 35v electrolytic cap in the Converter! So, I've named it "Killer". Thx for your vid.

@ke4est , BTW, in your explorations while repairing this meter, did you find any datasets for the "TOA8709" op-amp (IC2 & IC19)? I have not found anything about this chip online, other than one brief mention on a German website that compares micro-photography of different old ICs; apparently they conclude that the chip is basically the same as a uA709......
