My favourite sail yachts, especially those active in the sixties!

Is that just a Geary 21 that has some foils bolted on? The hull definitely has that Geary 21 look.

Remarkable to see nobody wearing a PFD, especially on the dinghies.

Re FDs, the most famous British FD, SuperCali……. Is on display at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, Cornwall, alongside Ben Ainslie’s Finn Rita. I was brought up at Finn regattas all round the UK and remember the experience with great fondness.

What happened to the FD ? Was a beautiful boat, fast and fun to sail. They even developed a FD jr. All disappeared!!!
@billdeuchler70308 күн бұрын
I sailed FDs in the '80 and '84 US Trials. It was a super boat, like driving a limo on the water. However it was a tough boat to sail as you needed a big crew and it was a lot to handle. Not something you would take out for a casual sail on Sarurday. The Olympics really brought a lot of sailors into the class, but as soon as it was dropped from the Olympic line-up the class shrank dramatically. It's still going but not like it was in the late 70s and 80s.

The very next video in my feed is literally the 2023 US FD Nationals, so they're still going. But anyone who'd be attracted to an FD these days is likely to be more attracted to the 49er (or 49er FX), which now occupies the FD's ecological niche.

Jeez, you might have asked him if he ever considered designing a winged keel himself, as there were examples before Australia II, or whether he thought Australia used Dutch input from the tank test designers in the Netherlands, or who was his favorite skipper, or did he dislike Dennis Conner as much as virtually everyone else, or whether Ranger was his design or that of Starling Burgess, or what he thought of Constellation (my personal favorite) and her getting sunk by some meathead in the Mediterranean, whether he thought the NYYC did a good job defending the Cup for all those years . . . was this Olin's last interview? Instead, you blow the interview on the Shields Class -- I mean, who really needs to focus on the Shields class?

nice post! and now in 2024 we're foiling narragansett bay standing on a board with a hand held inflatable wing. hard to believe it took almost 50 years for foils to catch on for general recreation and one design racing.

Awesome content guys! Quick question - do you use the same epoxy to do the final “hot”/clear coat that you used to laminate the carbon? Basically the same export all round?
