Just got off the Viva after 3 weeks on a transatlantic cruise. The buffet was the most disappointing venue I have experienced on any NCL ship. It is too small and cannot accommodate the crowd. They did open Food Republic during breakfast and lunch and that helped, but the buffet was a madhouse. The food was okay. There were healthy options, but the selection was repetitive. Some of the food tasted like cafeteria food, not the quality offered in other NCL ships, but maybe it is a sign of the times. I loved being able to purchase fresh carrot juice. They offered fresh crepes! I was hoping for more fruit cobbler. The desserts were very pretty to look at, but kind of tasteless, but maybe that was a good thing since I did not overindulge and I lost 3 pounds! We did not like the hours. In larger buffets, they can shut down sections and still keep it open. I felt we had to rush to make it for breakfast. Not too many people visited Indulge. We tried it a few times. I like the concept, but not the selection so much. Many of the items on the menu are best on a buffet so we can take small bites to sample. The Viva is a beautiful ship and the balcony rooms had the best layout, but the venues (Syd Normans, Theater, and the Atrium) are too small for guests to attend unless you get there very early. I still love NCL and would go on Viva again and plan on getting to everything early.

I didn’t find the “specialty dining” on Discovery Princess (Mexico Jan/Feb 2024) to be all that great. Oh, it wasn’t bad, it simply did not live up to the hype. In Crown Grill (which my travel agent paid for as a gift) I received exactly four (4) spears of asparagus with my filet. Four. That is just cheap. Lovely atmosphere and certainly quieter than MDR (if you ignore the folks one table over watching videos on their phone during dinner). You can get the same filet in MDR for $19 versus a $35 Crown Grill cover charge. Sabatini’s was just OK; again nothing spectacular. Sure, quieter than MDR but not worth $35. Service in both was excellent. Gigi’s Pizza was nowhere near as good as I had been made to believe. In fact I found it excessively ordinary and hardly worth $15. Service, however, was faultless. My best meals were in MDR. Next time (Majestic Princess / Mexico / Nov 2024) I’ll skip specialty dining (and the buffet for that matter - but that’s a different story) and take my meals in MDR, thank you very much.

Hi. Your video did not reference any charges for Gigi's. It is my understanding that as of Aug 2023 there is a $15 charge for Gigi's and that meals at this restaurant are no longer included in the cruise fare. Did you dine before or after the extra charges went into effect? This leads me to ask - if there had been a charge for Gigi's, would you have spent the money? Thanks.

The original formal dress was IMO a class separation image.

I agree that shorts and flip-flops are unsuitable for evenings, however the whole formal dress code is now a bit of a archaic throwback. Cruise ships are now floating resorts and people just want to relax. If people want to dress up that's great but it's time to move on and stop trying to recreate the golden days of cruising when there was a different outlook on life.

We will travel with this cruise in next weeks, do you know do they have any vegetarian menu?

They need to move away from stupid songs that aren't Japanese! No more Rollin on the river etc stop making the eggs into a snake and lifting it singing "I believe I can fly!" Bring back the onion volcano and flash of flame for excitement flare.

Why doesn't NCL allow 2 Platinum latitudes members and above to enjoy their 2 each perk Specialty dinners for 2 if they stay in the same room?

Hasuki would be better if the chefs could move away from ROLLING ON THE RIVER! Why not something Japanese?

Interesting. The visuals of the food in the video seems to match your analysis. It did look a little underwhelming. However, we're glad to see that a tradition created by English aristocrats in the 19th century has a presence on so many modern cruise ships today, and enjoyed by so many people of all nationalities.
