This is where I got my facts from "Tuskegee Airmen vs. Me-262s African-American fighter pilots shot down three German jets on one mission By Robert F. Dorr - February 25, 2013"
@mattd69313 күн бұрын
Not BS at all. For the mission on 24 March 1945, in which the 332nd Fighter Group had three pilots shoot down Luftwaffe jets, the unit earned a Distinguished Unit Citation. Additionally, in May 1942, the 99th Pursuit Squadron was renamed the 99th Fighter Squadron. It earned three Distinguished Unit Citations (DUC) during World War II. The DUCs were for operations over Sicily from 30 May - 11 June 1943, Monastery Hill near Cassino from 12 to 14 May 1944, and for successfully fighting off German jet aircraft on 24 March 1945. It really pays to know something about the subject before you comment and make yourself look like an idiot.
@zechariahlea23173 күн бұрын
Fun fact: Not one of the Tuskegee Airmen became an ace during the war, and for good reason. Most pilots prioritized kills over defending the bombers they escorted. German pilots quickly learned this and started sending half their squadrons as bait to lure the fighters away from the formation while the rest would pick off the bombers. The Tuskegee Airmen never took that bait, and always stayed with the formation. While this meant that they shot down less enemy aircraft, this also meant that they lost fewer bombers. Although the myth that they never lost a single bomber is not true, the number of bombers lost per mission was significantly lower than the USAAF average at the time.
@TheWraithTavernHistoryonTap3 күн бұрын
Thank you for sharing this insightful overview! It’s important to recognize the strategic choices the Tuskegee Airmen made during the war, and how their focus on protecting the bombers had a lasting impact.
@mattd69313 күн бұрын
The myth is based on a few facts though. They flew the longest bomber escort mission of the 15th Airforce. And they flew 179 bomber escort missions, with a good record of protection, losing bombers on only seven missions of the 179. And had a total of only 27 bombers lost, compared to an average of 46 among other 15th Air Force P-51 groups.

@RivetHead9995 күн бұрын
I may be mistaken, as I read about this years ago, but if I recall correctly, the orders the SS were given were to also kill the Wehrmacht troops as well in some of the prisons in addition to the high profile POWs. I do know there were a handful of similar instances where the SS (being the most loyal to Hitler and their ideology would kill their best friend or even themselves when given an order to do so) were to kill German soldiers, scientists and others who had valuable information or knowledge of the crimes carried out by the SS when the realization set in that the war was over. There were documents eventually uncovered that discussed a standing order to purge in the event of failure to protect any truly loyal party members (including SS) to hide crimes, avoid trials etc, with the hopes to try again in the future. SS officers were supposed to take their own life to avoid capture and interrogation, and kill any Wehrmacht (mainly officers and their assistants) as well as any soldiers presumed to have intel regarding any crimes, although the majority of the regular standing army had no idea about the camps or other atrocities outside of rumors until they were captured. Hitler thought through and beyond many things and tried preparing for any potential outcome, and believed so strongly in his ideologies and visions that he still wanted the future he imagined even if he were gone, so planned for many contingencies including the orders to destroy any evidence (including his own soldiers) to give the best chance at things continue thing even after losing the war, and to try again. There is nothing more noble than someone in power, with such conviction and strong belief in an ideology that they would give their own life for, and at the same time, there is nothing more terrifying and dangerous than that same type of man, willing to commit some of the most atrocious acts, and kill anyone to achieve that goal. It wasn’t for his own personal gain, but a radical ideology that meant more to him than his own life, and destroy anything that stood in his way. All he saw was the end goal, and ignored the countless bodies of men women and children that paved the path to his goal.
@TheWraithTavernHistoryonTap4 күн бұрын
A radical ideology can be a double-edged sword-sharp enough to cut through loyalty but dull enough to ignore the humanity of those involved. Quite the paradox, isn’t it?
