When building do you look for city or county codes? Or a better way to ask, which should you use over the other, city code or county code, or use both?
@CliffandCliff11 күн бұрын
great question - you need to follow all. But it all comes down to which permits you need. Whoever you go to pull your permits is whose rules you need to follow.

Thank you so much for this video. We had a tornado and a derecho rip through our community 2 years apart. The derecho (inland hurricane) did more damage to our house than the F3 tornado! We have an enclosed front porch, and the left side has been settling. My house is over 100 years old and many front porches in my area are all slowly sinking on one side. But after these storms, it is rapidly sinking and pulling away from the house. However the structural engineer the insurance company sent deemed it as preexisting and not exacerbated by the storms so my insurance company won’t cover the cost the repair so we are stuck having to fix it ourselves. It’s now to the point of I don’t do something soon it’s going to damage my house due to the pulling away. This was a tremendous help to begin figuring this out! Thank you.

How does anyone build their own home inside of a city without help these days, seems impossible. Too many codes to comply with.

I have soft dirt. What would you recommend for stabilizer at ground level?
@CliffandCliff5 ай бұрын
You can try driving the support stake further into the ground. And support the main post at bottom with a concrete block.

On a old house isn’t a good idea to put them on the front ? I plan on reinforcing the connections to the house before jacking it up . My worst fear is the old , rusty , toe nailed nails fail and the roof falls . I have seen it happen to houses around here that we’re not even being worked on .

As someone who recently took an interest in construction, it seems insane just how many different rules there are to comply with when building something
@CliffandCliff Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. And then once you have the rules understood. Then you have to get into what are the industry best practices lol

Not only that. Also stop in on jobsites when ever you see contractors building a home. Also dont be afraid to send emails or reach out to contractors on social media. Great way to build a business is show contractors, business owners and homeowners what you can do via your social media page.

Does L and I just take your word for the post depth ? Just kind of confused how they check that haha don’t want to mess up when I install mine
@CliffandCliff Жыл бұрын
I think the light company wants it 4' depth here in Indiana. Our light company provides a schematic of how they want temporary power to braced. They have no way of verifying the actual depth but if you dont bury it deep enough you run the risk of it pulling out the ground and then you have a whole situation on your hands.

What code I need for South Carolina for a shed building. 40x40 on roof rafters what size lumber I need
@CliffandCliff Жыл бұрын
Depends on several factors. But there are also a few different ways you can find the answer. Depending on what your county would designate your building as a commercial building or residential structure? I would email/call/visit your local building department and ask what your structure would fall under and ask them which code book and year have they adopted. If its residential your code would fall in Chapter 8. But also who ever is designing your building should know or be familiar enough to specify what size lumber you need. I always rely on my design professional or the local lumber yard to tell me what we need to use. Sending your design to the local lumber yard is likely the quickest way to find out.

First video I have seen to give instruction how to brace a porch. I guess the others are afraid because of liability issues. Could you not have used a small framing square instead of adjustable angle whatever? I noticed it was at right angle.

keep at it. Charge more ( cover all the costs that it takes to let you work ) then....charge a percentage for how much you want to take the risk to be there.....at least 20%. keep increasing your rates at least yearly. Good luck, work safe

Thanks for the video. At first I was confused as to why you didn’t put the 12 right on the line, but then I quickly realized that doing this wouldn’t put your angle on the right place and it would be cut weird. Thanks for teaching me today fellas. I’m trying to learn all I can. But quick question, what do you do if you don’t know the pitch and it’s not 12?
@CliffandCliff2 жыл бұрын
12 is base number for any pitch roof. you will never have a pitch where the base isnt 12 unless you are working on a flat roof. Thats how you end up with 16/12 and 12/12 roofs.
