The development of the Land Cruiser began during the Korean War when the United States government commissioned Toyota to produce a military utility vehicle similar to the Willys Jeep for use by U.S. forces in Japan. The Toyota Jeep BJ as it was first known was more robust and had a bigger engine and 1 ton axles compared to the Willys Jeep. The first BJ was heavily inspired by Willys Jeep because this is what the US government commissioned. In 1954 its name was changed to ‘Land Cruiser’ and the rest is history as they say. So no, it’s not a copy of any Land Rover. The very first Land Rover was also inspired by the Willys Jeep. After World War II, Maurice Wilks, the chief designer at the Rover Company, used a Willys Jeep on his farm in Anglesey, Wales. Recognizing the need for a similar versatile, go-anywhere vehicle for agricultural and industrial use, Wilks and his team set out to create a British version. Educate yourself before spewing nonsense.
