This was a Marie Lloyd classic. Marie was from Hoxton and you don't get much more Cockney than that! She knew my great-uncle Johnny Hyman who was in partnership with Morris Angel the theatrical costumier.

Any pubs in London playing this music nowadays?

‘Knees up knees up let’s get the breeze up’ A typically fine British pub song!:) It’s okay to heckle and join in at these events, in moderation of course!:)

Could someone briefly educate me on this cockney music or cockney rock as I've heard it referred to? I think cockney means you're from London? It seems to have a polka or some sort what we call rockabilly feel to it. Is it an English thing? meaning this was born in the UK?

paulquinn10 Cockney means someone who was born within earshot of Bow Bells, (the bells of the Church in the Cheapside district of London). Most of the music you refer to dates back to the old Victorian Music Halls. Today there are a few modern bands playing punkier versions of this stuff. Chas & Dave being the most famous, but there are others. Hope that helps.

+paulquinn10 Cockney. Means born within the sound of The Bow Bells. Church in the east end of London, Bow. My mum was a cockney, though the family moved around a bit.

Thanks for the comment - no it wasn't in a movie. My husband Martin wrote it over 20 years ago, as well as the other songs on my site. I love them so wanted to share them. Hope you enjoyed it.
