What a shame that to play this say on a camping trip, or on a sailboat, or in a park, you would have to schlep a rack-mount sampler/synthesizer/modeler/whatever, an amplifier, and a very long extension cord.

@brotherjoe.

Hi Wayne, it is a midi controller and the Patchman sounds are midi patches. They've been modeled to respond to the players breath and lip pressure. That's what makes them so believable. Regards, Joe Faith

I am amazed about how long the nylon strings has lasted. I do know on one I made 5 yrs ago has never broke strings I did replace the lower octive recently with more heavy guage wrapped nylon to give it more sustain. Its a 26 stringed, modeled from Musicmakers Limerick harp. I named him Vincent. About the crack, a good glue saturated in the crack also would help. I fixed a broken neck once with steel rods and kept it for 6 months and it never failed again.

Hi. Do you need to understand the fingerings of a sax or clarinet, etc. to play this or is this an interface that someone with a good ear and natural musical abilities can play with little knowledge of wind instrument fingerings? E.g. Can you set the scale/mode for the fingering so that your thinking more about the musical improvisation instead of trying to learn the fingering of a sax per say? I'm asking because I have a great ear and improvisation skills and I'm looking for something that will allow me to play without having knowledge of the instruments they mimic. Thanks.
@brotherjoe.
@brotherjoe. 6 жыл бұрын
Cosmo Spacemonkey I think you could figure it out with a good ear. It is based on the sax fingering system, but it's doable for by ear players. We can teach ourselves piano, guitar and other instruments, why not the wx5?
@lukasalihein
@lukasalihein 4 жыл бұрын
I know this is a late reply, and maybe not useful anymore, but the saxophone fingering system is the most modern and straightforward of the woodwinds (for the most part), so learning it is not particularly hard. Clarinet, flute, oboe etc all have more archaic/complex systems but saxophone is not too bad.

Hi Joe, Thanks for making this video. Too bad there are very few good demonstrations about the WX5 out there and I'm glad that I found yours. Very helpful and well explained! Soon after watching this I ordered the WX5 with its official hardshell case from Amazon. It arrived yesterday and I'm trying to get use to it; speaking of which, I also made a nice unpacking video for it to the community, as nobody ever made one. It can be found on my profile. Anyway, I do have a question about the WX5 calibration: According to the manual, both wind and lip led indicators should be OFF if no wind and/or lip pressure is applied to the breath sensor. However, in your video and some others too it seems like the lip led indicator turns ON even when you don't play the instrument. Is there a reason? Or maybe I got the calibration instructions all wrong? Also, I planned on asking you if you could share the Switch Settings that you configured on your WX5. But then realized that they might vary from mine, as you probably set them according to the sound module that you use, and perhaps with Matt's volume sound banks for that specific device. I'm currently trying to play with the reed mouthpiece on VSTs until the VL70-m with the Turbo VL chip that I bought from eBay arrives. But I'm having some calibration trouble and could really use some help. Much appreciated! Thanks

Hi Joe, I am a flute / alto sax doubler in the Central California area, mainly playing musical theater gigs these days. With so many of the books calling for more and more instruments, and sadly smaller pits - this could be a solution for me! I would be very interested to know what your full set up is, Wx5, which sound box, what type of amp? Did you load the patchman files to the sound box? These electronic gadgets are new to me, so apologies for my new potential user question. I am also understanding that the Akai EWI 5000 can have patchman loaded directly into the unit, negating the need for a sound box? Thank you for taking the time to produce this great video! I am looking forward to hearing back from you.
