I don’t think most people leave our country to avoid struggling in front of friends and family. For many, struggling becomes inevitable due to factors like the job market, economic recessions or their own shortcomings (which, in my opinion, is sadly more often the case). When that happens, they’re usually left with no choice but to take on odd jobs. It's easy to mistake a desperate individual for a hard worker. All the pizza delivery engineers and grocery store MBA graduates wouldn't continue doing this if they were back home because with their qualifications, they could get very good jobs. You could say that there is this pre-existing inferiority complex or lack of confidence that starts the downward spiral. There are so many things I feel we are not taught before moving abroad that can help students avoid all this bullshit. The problem arises when students give up on their dreams and get stuck in dead-end jobs with student loans hanging over their heads, just for the sake of "living abroad." That's extremely sad and disheartening to see. In all my years living in Europe, I haven't come across first generation Indians working in the marketing industry. Everyone told me it wasn't possible (you know who I’m talking about :P). Indians are equated with IT/Engineering. The only reason I could make it was because I didn’t let desperation overpower hard work. All in all, struggle is important. It teaches you some of life's most valuable lessons. But it’s even more important to know when and where to struggle. Have a vision, focus on your goals, learn how to formulate plans and everything you wish for will be yours.
