This old news now, but how might you suggest someone who is a heavier rider (220+) modifying the shim stack, and any guesses on how we might tune the LSC independent of the HSC with external adjustments? Some others have mentioned you can remove seals or drill a hole in the base valve piston shaft. Also, any ideas on why FAST and Andreani j-techsuspension.co.uk/products/andreani-piston-kit?variant=14301041926 might have modified the compression pistons?

Alex, great video. I actually don't mind the stiffer compression of the pike but my gripe is I just cannot get the rebound fast enough (less damping) for my liking. I'm currently on the rabbit stop and it's still not fast enough. Can I just do the rebound tune without touching compression or do they compliment each other ? Fed up of opinions on forums, your data evidences your improvements.

Is there a certain way to re assemble the damper unit? I've fitted it all back together but the compression adjuster keep on the going. (Low speed stops as normal) I'm waiting for the y bleed kit now but feel like it's not right as It just seems to go back together quite well compared to the strip. Torque for the bladder caps

Not sure your compression hole drilling is a valid test as it’s the low speed needle sitting against the seat in the hollow bolt that does the restriction not the size of the ports that are behind it. Been a while since I’ve torn a Charger 1 apart but it’s typically a needle and a seat that controls low speed, the ports are after the damping has taken effect. Aside from that the chargers don’t have a lot of low speed damping as it is (they lack support, same on Charger 2) and the Charger 1 saw no difference from the last 6 clicks to open anyway. Pretty sure all gains you saw were from reducing the preload on the high speed stack by raising the ring shim placement allowing it to open sooner, the high speed is where the chargers have typically suffered.
@ianjenn15 жыл бұрын
The port hole mod is for when you have unscrewed the needle as far as possible and you want to reduce low speed compression further. I prove at the end of the video that the port hole opening improves oil flow. Incidentally I tested both modifications independently on the same trails with a shockwiz and it was only the port opening that improved low speed score.
@jessehill37805 жыл бұрын
alex jennings you show it improves flow without the low speed rod installed so it’s kind of irrelevant since you have removed the main source of the restriction. That said looking up a cutaway view of Charger 1 (again been a bit since I had one apart) it looks like it’s not using a needle and seat but instead the needle lines up with the holes, so it is possible it has reduced it some but the shockwiz isn’t something I’d give a 100% definitive result on as even changing air pressure a tiny bit will make it give a different damper rating. Still surprised anyone would want to reduce a Charger 1 low speed damping even more than the small amount it has (its a very large low speed needle diameter), most negative comments are on its high speed.
@ianjenn15 жыл бұрын
Jesse Hill when the needle is fully unwound it is no where near the seat and lies above the port holes. The rate limiting step to oil flow is the port holes when the needle is fully retracted. If you drop the needle then at some point the needle against the seat would limit flow but not at the fully open position. Again I tested both shim mods and port mods independently.
@jessehill37805 жыл бұрын
alex jennings ok then that adds up. Like I said been a while since I had one apart and didn’t remember it that way.

Hey I love your video and am trying this mod. My question is you are drilling out the ports, along with the shim stack change? What oil did you use with this set up. Thanks again

Hi, what diameter drill you used to make these ports bigger? I went over lots of treads about charger damper mods and they mostly match what you did here, great job!

@@ianjenn1 I think what v m is wondering is where did you get the document you show in the video with the various shim configurations. I looked on the rockshox site and none of the documentation has any of this information. Can you share a link where you got your information? Great vid. I am swapping part to a new bike and I figured I should buff up the old pike before I fit it to a new frame. Reshimming and a luftkappe are what i am planning to do as well. Cheers
