I spent many years sailing my Marshall Sanderling. Wonderful boat. A joy to sail. Thanks to you, your Dad and your team. In my old age I've gone to the "dry side" running a Downeaster these days but have fond memories of the Marshall. Wishing you and your team continued success.

Whenever I see people reefing gaff or bermuda sails, it makes me more certain that it is a junk rig I really want. It's ridiculous how quickly a junk sail is reefed from the cockpit, with one hand, holding a cup of coffee in the other. A demonstration would be a 1 minute video instead of a 12 minute one. It's not just a party trick, but makes it a safer rig, especially for short handed sailors.
@ximonoАй бұрын
Using shock cord was smart! I think I'll adopt that on my gaff-rigged cutter. Thanks also for demonstrating how to furl a gaff sail, it was the only video I could find on KZbin on the topic.

I was 34 when I bought my brand new Sanderling with the hinged mast in 1995 - raising and lowering it was easy. Now that I am 64 it is not as easy - probably have only 10 good seasons left in me (if that)

Do racers feel there are any negatives to performance with a hinged mast on the Sanderling? I heard this is only for newer boats or masts? Thanks, Cliff

There's no better bay boat/near shore boat from Maine to the Chesapeake. Catboats are also a wide-beamed pleasure to sail. There's a museum in West Sayville N.Y. on the Great South Bay. Classic ! I have even seen them rigged as Ice-boats on Bellport Bay.

I asked what is the largest size trailerable catboat with the tabernacle hinge mast and I was warned that my comment went against community standards and removed? I’d love to hear the explanation of how that question violated anything at all
@marshallcatboatsbymarshall479 Жыл бұрын
That's weird. No issue on our end! Must be a KZbin algorithm thing... The largest trailerable cat with a hinge we make is 18'. Our larger 22' cat has a beam of 10' 6" which in most states requires an over the road permit to trailer. It is also 5660 pounds unloaded and too big and powerful a sail area to trust a hinge, so not a trailer sailer.

How long can a Cape Cod Cat be made without throwing the handling off. 40 years ago looked over one made of ferro cement and it was large but I wasn't capable of building it up from just the rig and hull, so that dream was put to rest then.

How often do you have to do this?
@marshallcatboatsbymarshall4792 жыл бұрын
They should be checked on a regular basis, especially if you're in a rolly anchorage/mooring field, as they can work their way loose. Most of the time you can just hammer them in tight again with a mallet (prevents scratching up the mast). If one or two have fallen out and the mast is bouncing around, take them out and start from the beginning.

I wonder if your mast (assume hollow aluminum) is lighter than a Herreshoff America 18s….any idea?
@wwayus3 жыл бұрын
I do a variation on that. A single reef line that's dead-ended on the boom near the clew, up through the grommet, down to a cheek block on the boom, then forward along the boom with padeyes to keep it from fouling the mainsheet and its blocks, to another cheek block on the boom at the tack, then up to the tack's reefing grommet, down the other side to a block mounted on the deck, and back to the cockpit. One line does both ends. I marked the halyards so I know where they're going to be for a 1st or 2nd reef. The reefing process is: 1. Take up on the topping lift some. 2. Drop the halyards to their 1st or 2nd marks. 3. Tighten the reef line from the cockpit; hold it with a cam-cleat on the cabin top. 4. Release the topping lift. On my Sanderling, I can take in or shake out a reef in 15 seconds flat under any conditions, single-handing. I found trying to tie the forward and aft reef lines to cleats on the boom when it's sloppy out is often impossible, particularly on the Sanderling; it's a little easier on the 22 where things happen a bit slower. Also, I use 5/16" braid for the reefing line which is thick enough to get a good grip on but not quite so bulky that I'd be bothered by all that stuff up there. (Racers never stop racing, even if they never race any more.) I also asked Quantum to add a couple inches to the reef points lines, which makes tying them loose easier. Lastly, as to the other method for a quick reef, the name of the boat is Sandalize. Good video.

Jeff. (or anyone else with knowledge) Did you build or approve a Sanderling with the mast set further aft for a spinnaker? I’m looking at a 1979 (?) but am not convinced that it came from your shop like this. Seems to me it would create a balance problem. Thanks in anticipation. John.
@marshallcatboatsbymarshall4793 жыл бұрын
Hi John. There were a few Sanderlings built with sloop rigs over the years but they were all kit boats which were finished by the owners. I don't believe any of them were rigged for spinnakers. Geoff

My grandmother taught us to furl a gaff sail by pulling the leach from a point opposite the first reef. This would create a hammock into which the sail would be flaked like folding a sail. The hammock is held with one hand on the leach while the flakes are placed into the hammock with the other hand. After the last flake we would evenly roll the flaked sail in towards the boom and gaff. The resulting furl would be a tight roll, free of wrinkles, if we did it correctly. Otherwise we would have to start from scratch. She was a stickler for details and felt, like a clean, dry bilge, a tight furl was a sign of true seamanship.

Thanks for sharing that! I was told something along those lines, but couldn't figure out how it should be done. The hammock analogy was very helpful. When you say "pulling the leach from a point opposite the first reef", I assume you mean the point along the leech that meets the first reefing point towards the clew when pulled tight?

As I lift to separate the hinge when lowering the mast on my Sanderling, the mast comes up out of the base. I have tried to let the hinge soak with WD 40 to see if it will separate easier but the mast still wants to come up from the base before the hinge separates. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

@@marshallcatboatsbymarshall479 I noticed that my sail hoops can get hung up in the gap/handhold when hoisting. Any tips?
@marshallcatboatsbymarshall4794 жыл бұрын
@@Graystoke unfortunately that is an inherent issue with the hinge. We find that if you slack the halyards a tad, then give a quick pull it helps get over that gap. We've seen inserts some people have made over the years, but that's not always effective either... Key thing with the hinges is to keep them clean, salt free and periodically lubricated with a DRY lubricant so they don't get stuck.
