For the first 2 minutes one can hear a clunking sound in the background and apparently that is the shredder chewing up old Automobiles and the like so great sound effects. No doubt once the dust settled they probably were thinking maybe we should have sorted this back in Pembine or Crivitz (but that might have been too crowded at the latter) While luckily they didn't wind up in the mess but having the Hazmat tanker and the center beam flat on that siding did not help they might have even had more gons than the capacity of the siding but it looked like they had a long NOKL gon for the ore service whenever that is supposed to happen

Are the tracks out of gauge? Odd for it to just derail on straight track. But then again all it takes is one inch of lift due to ice but still... trains are heavy!

The SD40-2s are 3000 hp, so the SD9 is 1250 less... and likely more as the generator is 69 yrs and tiring...

Not sure how much luck is involved. With poor track like that the odds are on your side you're going to see something fall off the rails.

You're so right! The tourist line on which I worked for a bunch of years had a spot where the line went down to cross a creek. In the fall and in the rain, a single engine (F-7, GP-7 or GP-9) couldn't get the consist up from the creek level. The train usually was 4 or 5 coaches brackets by one engine on each end. Even though we sanded all the way, we had to send the second engine crew memberto the engine on the other end to shove.

i remember in the early 80s when when the els first took over from the milwaukee road they were still hauling ore from the groveland mine. i worked at the strohs warehouse on the bass lake road. many a time they would be coming up the grade from like bass lake to the area of the underpass culverts an couldnt quite make it to antoine yard where they handed the cars off to the cnw. they would back down the grade an come back with half a train an repeat.

track maintenance isn't a top priority out there in Wisconsin hey. because i have seen on a number of your videos were the tracks are so unlevel and wavey that im surprised they don't have more derailments happen. I'm not trying to be dick but simply pointing out a factor that seen numerous times.

The annoying sound that you hear on your scanner is something that is bleeding over from another frequency, which is a harmonic frequency either higher or lower than the one you are tuned to to hear the Rwy activities. Harmonic frequencies involve some math, but basically it is a strong signal bleeding over onto the one you listen to like a ghostly copy image. Where I live, one of the RR frequencies experiences strong bleed-over from an NOAA channel. So, sometimes you can hear the RTC giving instructions to a train, and catch weather information clear as a bell in the background. Whether the radios on the locomotives pick up this "bleed-over" or not, I don't know, but several of my scanners do not discriminate, and I get to enjoy the cacophony of noise. I believe that much better quality antennae, I mean base-station, not rubber duckies on scanners, can help cancel these effects out. The sound itself, is a CTCSS squelch tone. It could be pager info being sent off a tower nearby. The sound itself is analog, but we don't hear any voice or data transmission, so it could be a hybrid system, or it could be a system that only needs to send data in very small amounts, so we do not hear the data burst noise. The tone is to alert either a group of receiving devices (in the case of volunteer FD pagers), or to send a message to only one single unit. Each device has a unique identifier, to be able to "go off" only when it receives something destined specifically to that unit, or as a group. This prevents many ears or eyes from receiving private information, and prevents disturbing those who do not need to be called out. As a former vol. FD responder, the analog pagers we had were set to discrete, and would only "go off" if the message was for the holder. Or you could turn off discrete, if you knew how, and receive all messages that were sent, regardless of what the contents were or level of privacy. The trade-off was that you could expect the thing to "go off" at any time, day or night. Scanner radios do not have the ability to discriminate, so they receive all traffic on the frequency, including the funny sound of the tone. When the pager being alerted receives either its unique identifier tone or the group tone, it wakes the audio circuit and then broadcasts the voice message, or if it is a text pager, puts the text msg on the screen for the holder to read.
