i happened across a "short" last week of Patti discussing Celine's cover. She was a little bitter b/c Celine's cover was more widely received than her version, as she felt she did as good job as Celine. I found it silly b/c you are comparing Apples to kumquats. By this time, while Patti had cross-over hits (Stir It Up, On my own), her core audience was black/ R&B (which is how ALL black artists are defined (Warwick's delivery/interpretation was pop vs R&B) Celine's core audience was white/pop, so of course, she would sell more than Patti. As for who sang it better? There is NO better or worse, as it simply comes down to a matter of preference......I think both women did an exceptional job, but Patti's interpretation and vocals are unparalleled (This is a pop song and Patti nailed it, her vocals, inflection BOTH the recordings of both the track and video match perfectly).

Patty doesn’t sing… she SCREAMS, and there’s a huge difference between the two and I don’t respect any artist who immediately pulls out the RACE CARD… THATS ONE THING TINA TURNER NEVER DID and that’s why she was a SUPER STAR and unfortunately Patti LaBelle never will be! Count your blessings! 💞

First of all it’s Patti and not “Patty”… I do agree Celine and Patti has two different ways of singing. Also Patti has never pulled out the race card UNNECESSARILY. The music industry has put r&b/soul singers in a little box, which has always been due to race. Patti has never slammed Celine Dion, her issue has always been with the racism within the music industry (and she is correct). Lastly, Patti is very content with her career, she is a superstar in her own right. Tina Turner has too spoken about the racial issues with the industry. So your comparison is completely invalid. And for the record if Patti was “Screaming” she would have lost her voice about 30 years ago. Her longevity speaks volumes. If you don’t like her music that’s fine. But don’t be a troll and hate with invalid points.

It's not really fair to compare them. Ftr, I am a Black woman. What is undeniably unfair is that Patti is paid nowhere near what Celine is paid. Yes, it is true that money is driven by fan base and popularity. But it is also driven by what record labels and advertisers DECIDE to pay. Celine has been nearly retired for years. Most of her fans have aged. Whereas Patti has been seen continually on tv, and concert stages non stop and she has products in Walmart bakery. It is their gross pay IMBALANCE that is absolutely unfair.

Record labels and advertisers decide to pay based on statistically backed potential revenue, Patti had her chance to go mainstream but after the success of Winner in You but she stood firm on R'nB a decision that I respect, I prefer Patti's but I fully understand why Celine's version worked better to the masses (her vocal delivery in this song was easier to digest)

I feel badly for this comparison they are both different but typically Patty sang it better but it’s close. I feel badly for Patty if this “is a wrong” and is racially motivated. And it would not surprise me. I am obviously torn.
