Great Review you told me EXACTLY what I needed to hear, I come from a traditional Art background so I tend to mix things a as I go, Trying to develop a linear style but is slows me down A LOT and makes not want to finish pieces because it feels like a drag trying to sort out all the layers also my Tablet is WEAK AF and gets REALLY bogged down when I start making more layers

Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of videos before this one on the topic it’s like mostly because of tuition. If you wanna go to a really high-end art school or even a decent one it’s at least $400,000 and every professional artist tells you don’t go to school because you can learn everything you need for free or for like under $1000, taking online classes or reading books or even taking professional courses. You don’t need any sort of education to get into the art industry to work as a professional artist it’s like one of the few jobs where you don’t need any sort of diploma or paperwork to land the job. It’s just not affordable. Nobody would want to go to an art school for that much money. It’s more money than actual going to school for a decent job that you know is going to pay you well. They just want you to be able to do the thing that they want you to do. Also art schools are teaching you stuff that would only be relevant like 100 years ago they’re not telling you how to market yourself or how to build an online presence. They’re focussed on like gallery stuff. Nobody really does anymore unless you’re a fine artist with physical painting, you really only would want to go to an art school if you are planning to teach at the university which requires you to have a masters, a lot of people who graduate school can’t even get a job so university in general isn’t worth it if you just want to work it better to do a trade since a lot of jobs are getting replaced by AI now trades are like one of the few things you can do if you actually wanna work

I'm not a fan of they brush system in Procreate so I mainly used it for sketching sometimes. Mainly use Clip Studio since it has all the tools needed to make manga as well as illustrations. I used to used a..."free" version of PS a long time ago, subbed for a year a few years ago but the price is just too high and that in part played a role in me also sticking with CSP over PS, the subscription price is more reasonable which I use on Ipad and I bought a permanent EX license for pc when it was on sale a couple of years ago, much more affordable.

It's kind of sad that in Japan they pay animators like minimum wage. Nobody wants to work as an animator there because there's no Union and they hardly pay you anything. The only reason they do it is because they love to draw but even they're starting to not want to do it anymore. So they have to outsource a bunch of animators from other countries. If you pay attention to the end credits of a lot of anime, there's a lot of English names because they're getting like Americans freelance artist to like animate their stuff because they're so understaffed. But it's much better to work as an animator in like America because there's unions. But it's still not a good career because it's so unstable and they pressure you a lot to get a lot of work done in a really short amount of time

Most artists are notoriously bad teachers. Most of the art courses that I've gotten maybe like 20% of them. I've been actually satisfied with. Most artists have been drawing for so long. When they try to teach it to a beginner they leave out a bunch of steps and it's mostly like just watching them draw. I guess it's hard because they've been drawing for so long. They don't know what it's like for a beginner or an early intermediate artist

I saw a thread once where a nip said that basically animators in Japan get paid literal dog piss to animate an entire season of an anime. Fella had a Higurashi avatar. Seems animators are undervalued no matter where they come from. I dunno, feels like something has to change but is nigh impossible to happen.

That's true. It's also Japan's culture. They know they have to change something and like pay people more but they're stuck in tradition. They don't want to change the rules. In Japan, everybody's taught to be quiet and do what they're told. So nobody speaks up. If you speak up they think there's something wrong with you and then they'll ostracize you. Like even if you say something to your family, that's not the cultural norm. Your family will abandon you and pretend like they don't even know you. Japanese culture is really cold and ruthless

As someone who directly worked on Teen Titans GO for both the series and also on one of the movies, I can safely say that the show is absolutely not a low-effort, or a budget friendly affair to create and neither are the shows you mentioned alongside it. Just like any animation production, each episode demands countless work hours from hundreds of artists across a multitude of departments, usually from multiple studios, to produce from start to finish. The end product you see can be consumed within 11-22 minutes, but I assure you that the sheer volume of work hours and corporate dollars that went into it far outweighs the end result. This is par for the course with any corporate funded entertainment and unfortunately, these are the types of shows that will outlast most others because they produce not only a tv show, but a product/series of products that can be used to provide financial returns for shareholders that far exceeds the funding which is provided to animation studios that actually create the episodes. Additionally, east asian countries are not the only gate keepers of animation jobs in 2D animation right now. Canada has been a strong contributing workforce in 2D+3D animation for decades now, and countries throughout Latin America are picking up work from clients in the international market as they continue to prove that they have the talent to compete on a global scale. But in general, the animation industry currently(including 3D for film, tv and games) is not stable by any stretch of the word. This is typical for the entertainment industry, but currently it is at an all time low as most of the world is cutting spending in not just entertainment, but basically every other market you could name right now. This is not to say that a career in animation is not worth while! For some, it is still worth pursuing, for others, they might question if financial stability should be sought elsewhere. Unfortunately these days it seems that you cannot have both financial stability and successful pursuit of your creative interests in the animation industry without compromising somewhere. These are individual outlooks that no one person can decide for you. These are still things that I question every day personally and I currently work in the 2D animation industry. But despite these questions, I do know that the world needs art in all forms and while animation might not bounce back to the popularity it once had, it will not fully disappear either. Pursue it if you wish, but do so knowing that the rough times being had now will repeat themselves in the future. Such is the unpredictable nature of art and entertainment trends in a global market.
