@@omairSD I play The Cure from time to time. Fun fact DJ Premier is a big Smiths fan.

I know some white people who bought a brownstone on about 104th street in the 80s and more white people started to move in and then there was kind of a cross over to black music and I wonder if what you heard was part of that. I'm only talking sociology, don't all pile on please.

The Smiths correlated more or less with my time at Uni in the 80's, my favourite band as a student and loved them ever since ! Mind you what I learned about the way M and JM tried to rip off Rourke and Joyce left me less than impressed tbh - not cricket !

The songs that stick out to me on this record rhe most are Hand In Glove, What Diference Does It Make, This Charming Man, Dont Owe You Anything. The rest of the album doesn't do it for me sadly. Don't get me wrong, the band sounds great and they are a timeless act. But the songs only got better as the years went on. For a first record they did a good job.

Talk about an album that doesn't need to be "remastered." Chat amongst yourselves. To quote a hilarious fan, " Morrissey has his dinner in his back pocket.." Let's not forget the unnecessary, purely cosmetic, hearing aid, either. Here's a neat trick-- put the live, "Cosmic Dancer" on. The one with the duet of Morrissey and David Bowie. It's beautiful and highlites post Smith's stuff as well. Not to mention hero friendship :) Honorable mention: Live version of, "The First of the Gang to Die." Ok, yeah, heavy stuff. Come back to Earth with, "My Love Life," "Tomorrow" and "National Front Disco." 🎉

It's so rare that I love nearly every song on an album - any album - on the first listen. And they've only gotten better on repeated listens. As a bass player, I found the band via Andy Rourke. But I can't help but be floored by Marr and Morrisey. I'm almost never wowed by vocalists but man this guy is special. This is a very special band. From what I read about Morrisey, he knew it too, and wasn't shy about voicing that.

First I heard this I was in a lorry eating crisps with some mates near the bloody council houses where I lived with my mum and gran. We lived in Crippled Ram near Bustingnut back then, and we'd take the double-deck bus from Stocking to Upper North Southington to get our hair flattened and have our trousers waxed before footie. We'd follow up with having cheese pudding and biscuits for late tea.

25:29 Still Ill is the centerpiece of this album, to my ears. This Charming Man is amazing, but Still Ill has a certain bleakness to it set atop that wonderfully meandering guitar. Ah, and when it all comes together for the chorus "...oh, am I still ill?" Love it.

As merry as the days were long I was right and you were wrong Back at the old grey school I would win and you would lose But you've got everything now You've got everything now And what a terrible mess I've made of my life Oh, what a mess I've made of my life No, I've never had a job Because I've never wanted one I've seen you smile But I've never really heard you laugh So who is rich and who is poor? I cannot say...oh You are your mother's only son And you're a desperate one Oh... But I don't want a lover I just want to be seen...oh...in the back of your car A friendship sadly lost? Well this is true...and yet, it's false Oh... But did I ever tell you, by the way? I never did like your face But you've got everything now You've got everything now And what a terrible mess I've made of my life Oh, what a mess I've made of my life No, I've never had a job Because I'm too shy I've seen you smile But I've never really heard you laugh So who is rich and who is poor ? I cannot say...oh Oh... You are your mother's only son And you're a desperate one Oh... But I don't want a lover I just want to be tied... oh...to the back of your car To the back of your car To the back of your car To the back of your car To the back of your car To the back of your car Oh...
