I really do think the "him" Ian McCulloch was talking about is Jesus Christ in this song. For the record, I am not a Christian. Check the wikipedia page for this song. He said they lyrics were planted in his mind by God. He just woke up with them one morning.

Pete's drumming is horrible.... faster, slower, faster again.... not even matching the song.

Honestly, its a mediocre audition tape. Drumming very forced, mediocre. Even George's guitar is mediocre at best. It basically shows George knew the chords and struggled with the solo. Bad choice of song-- they later did it better. I'd pass.

In retrospect many people are baffled that the Beatles were rejected by Decca, but listening to this tape I can't help but agree with your sentiment. They sounded like a really rudimentary band here. Just one of thousands of bands among the Liverpool beat scene
