These are very nice. Pablo Picasso said that the innocent, childlike artwork was the purest form of art. He could paint lovely, masterful art. But he was always trying to get back to that loose representational, childlike art he used to draw.

Absolutely loved this video, and I totally agree with many of the things you said about doing the things you enjoy. Having a big house cost $$$ and imagine the cleaning. I hate doing housework now. All my life at the moment is working at my job and doing housework at home. I miss my hobbies so bad, hopefully at some point I can get back into them. But I'm enjoying watching others on youtube and I learn a lot.

Update on this video: We are about to receive a ton of these sketchbooks and some will pretty much have all colors in stock! There will not be any dotted versions in our restock, but we will indeed have all colors of the regular sketchbooks very soon. Thank you once again to @artbecomings for shouting us out in this video and for showing small biz that love ❤️ 🎨

We as society put too many labels on too many things. We should just be happy and draw, paint, sketch or scribble anything they like whether it turns out ugly or pretty. There are no rules in art, just do you and be happy with what you do. People work in more than one sketchbook at a time. If you worry about what others do, you will lose the happiness in your own. Keep creating 💙💛💜

Definitely agreed with you on the sketchbook v. finished art book. Then realized I actually do the finished pieces thing 😅 but it’s because I get books with high quality watercolor paper and don’t want to “waste” the paper. But it does all feel like practice to me. I’m definitely going to make a true sketchbook soon though because my drawing skills are lacking and I need that ugly practice to explore. Thanks for the reminder! And also the note about people not caring when you sketch in public, that’s going to help me get over that anxiety.

Supplies get sad when we don't use them 😁 so true! I am also 40, also an artist with a day job, started painting when I was ~30, with several gaps in between, and only in recent years I have "allowed" myself to use the nice supplies for just everyday art practice, for missteps, explorations and just playing around. And I have learned from all of that! Thank you for your channel!

thank you for your honest thoughts about that. In face I came across quite some of these Sketchbook tours you mentioned, and I am honest I am intimidated by them. I am barely showing what I do. In fact funnily ebough I have that very same Sketchbook you do, my mom brought it to me from Sweden and I don't know I want it to be special. I only habe one page of swatching and a double paged fox I am working on. And I plead myself guilty I will be working hours on it, but I do so because I want to feel happy about it, I want to practice fur and values... it should be a safe place. I hope you are well, Alaska is so beautiful and I really enjoyed to see your drawings as they are. In fact some are really lovely.

I got divorced 11 years ago after 36 years abusive marriage, my children cut me off due to my narsasistic x husbands lies. I don't have friends or other family or pets, my art supplies are my life!!! I've got no one to spend my money on and the pleasure I get out of art supplies is enormous, I was 68 last week and bought my self art goodies and wrapped them up and opened them on my birthday. I've learnt you have to make things special for yourself

I love your sketchbook. You are so on your way. I learned to be very careful of the negative things I say to myself, especially about my art. No matter what a picture, drawing, or painting looks like, there's always something I like about it, so that's what I look for and what I speak about. Even if you only like the colors you chose, I would say that instead of saying oh it's ugly or I oh I don't like it. Building ourselves up it's the best way to build ourselves up. Loving your journey. ❤

We have a giant window in our shower for natural light and I love it but other people get freaked out when they see it cause they don’t know it’s one sided. 😂😂 Love the vlog. ❤❤ And I don’t keep a daily sketchbook. I use scrap paper and then toss it. I hate seeing that stuff cluttering my art room. I do have a binder of my “finished” pieces that I absolutely hate so that I can see my progress.

There is some very nice work in your sketchbook! Your moose have gotten better with each one. And your birds are quite sweet looking! I absolutely agree with you about the definition of a sketchbook. In fact, I label my sketchbooks as such - I will put a label on them or write on the front to denote it as a place where I can make all my mistakes, learn what I need to learn, experiment and just in general make bad art. It's a reminder to myself about it. But I really hate to put a label on good art vs bad art. It's all art in those books. These books are smaller and portable and I have them all over the house, in my purse, my travel trailer, everywhere. I don't worry about finishing them or not. Some are thicker than others and they are all different varieties. Some are for strictly dry media, others are mixed, and still others are for watercolor. As for my finished pieces, I have 2 going. They are larger and not at all portable. One is for dry media and the other for watercolor (or whatever other kind of wet media I have. I don't think of them as sketchbooks. They are my art journals. Welcome back btw!
@artbecomings Жыл бұрын
Thank you Tracie. Yes, I have a regular royal talens for the quick sketches (which is currently what I’m mostly doing) and then I’m beginning to have other sketchbooks for various intentions and media. It’s best not to differentiate good vs bad art, I agree. I do have a tendency of not finishing and when I settle down into my new place I would like to try to do one more polished piece for week just for myself and to push myself to think more about background, composition and lay out. All of it is part of the process and exploration and what makes art so fun.

I'm happy to see you back! I've spotted quite a few wonderful drawings in your sketchbook 😍 Many of these artists with beautiful sketchbooks also keep messy sketchbooks for experiments and quick drawings. I have a "messy sketchbook", where everything is allowed and a couple of nice sketchbooks for more finished pieces. I usually don't show the really messy drawings or paintings. Sometimes they're so ugly that I have to put gesso on it. Otherwise they haunt me 😅
@artbecomings Жыл бұрын
Yes I completely understand. I have ripped out one or two sketches. And I have thought about having a “nicer” sketchbook to do more considered work. I definitely want to continue a messy sketchbook because I feel I learn a lot from ugly sketches but I also want to start doing pieces on which I spend more than 10-30 minutes, with more thought, planning and intention. I think a part of me feels if I put in so much effort and I still don’t like it- it’ll make me feel extra bad but the reality is learning is by taking risks including taking risks with time and effort.

Have you tried a damp brush on the stones to see if you can use them as watercolors?
@artbecomings Жыл бұрын
No, I haven't! But when I unpack them again after my move, I'll give that a try. I do imagine, like pastels, I can put them on paper and use water, alcohol or that drying medium to smush them around.

I didn’t buy art supplies or did any art from 2004 to 2020. Same story as you. I went to school a LONG time, then got my stable job and a couple kiddos. The pandemic hit me straight on: I was juggling kids, work from home. So difficult. It was a mess. So in April 2020 I bought a few art supplies to get back into it at night after they went to bed. Didn’t take long before my office was my studio. The endorphins from drawing and painting are so pleasant. I feel so good when I paint. Anyways, it was kind of lonely doing art in a bubble so I started posting on Instagram. I would post everything I did. Worts and all. That freed me from that fear of failure. Some are nice, some really not. And it gave me a community. You should post on Instagram too. There are some nice people there. Especially the watercolorists. I really enjoy your videos. I am a total art supply addict. Just holding a brush makes me happy!
@artbecomings Жыл бұрын
I’m so glad you were able to find time after your kids went to bed for yourself! I’m surprised I didn’t get back into art during the pandemic- I kind of missed that opportunity but happy I found it this past November. And yes my dining room table became my “studio”- but I live by myself. I love that feeling after having drawn- even if it is bad. I’ve found that on days I feel fulfilled with life in general it’s because I’ve drawn. I’ve accumulated a ton of art supplies but just one pencil or colored pencil makes me super happy and excited! And I love that on KZbin I can find that community. I do have a secret instagram account where I post - though I haven’t posted since I got a new cell phone and haven’t logged into it. I’ll probably share it here one day soon. Even thought I often say most of art work is bad because it is I still feel an odd pressure that if I show my art work it should be at least a little ok even though it’s counter to what I’m saying and what the whole point of my KZbin is. But now you’ve given me more inspiration to share it!
