When MN upset Montreal, I said The Islanders won the Stanley Cup, now they they've got to earn it, WHICH THEY CERTAINLY DID.

So far the 2024 NLCS mirrors this series exactly: The Mets were heavily favored over the Dodgers in the 1988 NLCS. The Dodgers are heavily favored over the Mets in the 2024 NLCS. 1988 NLCS: Mets win Game 1, Dodgers win Game 2, Mets win Game 3. 2024 NLCS: Dodgers win Game 1, Mets win Game 2, Dodgers win Game 3. The heavily favored team up 2-1 winning Games 1 and 3, the underdog Game 2. 1988 NL MVP: Kirk Gibson (Dodgers) 2024 NL MVP: Shohei Ohtani (Dodgers) 1988 NL MVP runner-up: Darryl Strawberry (Mets) 2024 NL MVP runner-up: Francisco Lindor (Mets) The Dodgers had home-field advantage in the 1988 NLCS. The Dodgers have home-field advantage in the 2024 NLCS. In Game 3 in 1988, neither team scored in the first inning while the winning team scored twice in the second. In Game 3 in 2024, neither team scored in the first inning while the winning team scored twice in the second.

Just found another similarity: In 1988, after the 3 games at Shea Stadium were played, the Giants faced the Eagles. In 2024, after the 3 games are played at Citi Field, the Giants will face the Eagles.

There's no way that MINI MARKET STEARNS can build up a team like the one structured by the best GM in METS' history, FRABK CASHEN.

Those were the days when players were not pampered, especially pitchers. Today's pitchers are overpaid and pampered.

Nothing like the METS team of the 80's. They had speed, power , solid pitching, good defense, good chemistry and strong leadership from the front office all the way down to the team.

With a somewhat deeper pitching staff (one they would have the next season), the Mets would've gotten into the post-season in 1985. Loved that 1985 squad.
@exposethenwo64914 ай бұрын
The lack of run support in August and September did not help. Gooden pitched well enough to have four additional wins. But zero run support resulted in four no decisions with Mets splitting two games.

@@exposethenwo6491 True. They also had a lousy June which included losing 3/4 to the Cardinals at home.

This was the end of what should have been a dynasty. After the 86 championship season, the 1987 Sport Magazine Baseball preview had on the cover "Amazing, a Mets dynasty" with Darryl Strawberry pictured. The article predicted a Mets dynasty based on the current stars and the excellent farm system. How wrong they were as the dumb Kevin Mitchell trade not too mention a plethora of other problems ruined what should have been a dynasty.

Had Rangers season tickets (first row blue on Rangers end) and can still remember it like yesterday. Had given them up by time they won the Cup but could not have been any louder. The guy who had tix behind us had a friend who was a ticket taker at the Coliseum so got in to see the games there too. Seeing Potvin on his knees was the cherry on top. How appropriate that he should be on his knees, after all, he does s***.

Ron Darling will always be my favorite. His last 6 starts in ‘89 he averaged giving up 2 runs a game and averaged 7 innings per start. And almost all of those starts were losses because the team couldn’t hit. Not one starter had an ERA over 3.52. Lots of tough luck losses in ‘89. Cone: 14 W El Sid: 14 W Darling: 14 W Ojeda: 13 W Doc: 9 W Viola: 5 W I’m clearly still not over any of it. 😂

Don Cherry claims to this day that had the Bruins beat the Canadiens in their semi final series, that they'd have destroyed the Rangers. Clearly Grapes never actually watched this series because it would have been the other way around. His goon squad got to 7 with the Habs because the Canadiens were crippled by injuries, and they STILL outclassed Boston.
