You're very welcome, thanks for watching! You might also enjoy my recent video about the Lucky Cat temple in Tokyo! PS - if you arrive in Nikko earlier than I did, and are thinking of catching the bus, you may want to go further out of town to see the waterfalls. It would become a long day, but if you start earlier, could be worth it.

I stayed at an APA hotel in Shinjuku this past February. Cozy and affordable. My only complaint was that the room was very warm and I could not adjust the temperature. I had to call the front desk to have them lower the room temperature. Front desk was very helpful relocating my luggage as I had it delivered by mistake to another APA hotel in Shinjuku.

Thanks Richard! Yes, this was entirely filmed with the Pocket 3, apart from maybe some ticketing parts with my Galaxy S20 phone. I only had it for a couple of days at that point, so wasn't sure how to use it properly, but I was pleased with the results. The screen is much larger than the previous versions BUT it's still so small everything looks amazing on it and you can become careless with technique, so it's important to still take care with movement and focus. I also now film in 50p so I can half the speed to make things smoother. Overall though, I love this camera for this kind of video!

Interesting culture Japan being a country where space is a luxury so you need to have great design skills in order to give the guest the required amount of stuff/features. I prefer to pack light when I travel as it gets really annoying to carry a heavy bag/backpack after a while, also unless my destination is in the middle of nowhere I can visit the city centre and buy something that I didn't want to bring from home because of weight or size reasons. You're very welcome! I'm afraid there isn't a direct train route between them that I know of. You'd need to return to Tokyo. I recommend taking the bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchi Go for Mount Fuji, as it's quicker than the train options and cheaper too. You go from the Long Distance Express Bus station in Shinjuku on top of the department store opposite the South exit. Try to buy the tickets in advance or you may have to wait a couple of hours for a seat. PS - Also consider visiting the waterfalls in Nikko on the tourist bus route. PS - look out for a new video from me soon about visiting Gotokuju Temple near Tokyo with all the Lucky Cats - it's really nice!

@@carollynntran I think you can pay separate fares, but I just walked everywhere to the sights in the video. You'd need transport to the waterfalls though. Hi Gordon, I wanted to comment on your purge of 10,000 prints. I was recently in a situation where there was a need for personal photos that were taken well over 40 years ago. All of my own prints, negatives and slides had been accidentally destroyed - which was a very bad experience. A family friend, whom I had not spoken with for 40 years, came to the rescue. He had digital copies of his Ektachrome slides - and just as importantly, the files were labelled and catalogued. They suddenly seemed to take on the value of a life insurance policy, when you need it most. This is bound to happen to many people. What is your recommended system for saving irreplaceable photos? Thank you 👍
@GordonsTravelTips
@GordonsTravelTips Ай бұрын
Hi there, yes, that video was on my main channel, so thanks for checking out my new travel tips one here! I agree, the most valuable photos are those with people in them. I've kept all of those as someone WILL invariably want or value those at some point. As for saving old photos, it's the same as new ones, at least once you've scanned them. Try to tag them with the names of people you know in the pictures as you will forget! Then catalogue them in a way that works for you - I tend to group my photos by event or trip, with a date to help track them down. For example, New York April 1998. Then make copies and backups. I use a local NAS for my full storage, but backup onto portable drives that I keep elsewhere, and also upload onto cloud services although you will need to pay a recurring subscription for those. Google drive is quite cheap though and also lets you integrate with Google Photos which can automatically use face detection to group photos by certain people, which can be really useful when searching.

Trader Joes peanut butter cups are truly dangerous. When I was in College the TJ near me had packs of beer, aptly named "beer" in a nondescript bare aluminum can. Just under $1 per beer and various pack sizes. We thought we lucked out and would be able to get cheap booze. Turns out it was some of the worst liquid courage we had ever tasted. @@GordonsTravelTips One of the advantages of living in a city that is relatively calm when it comes to people's movement is that I can compare my part of the world (Stockholm, Sweden) to a place like say Manhattan where people don't seem to stop and just move forward to their destination. This is where I will do a social experiment and just stand still and see if anyone reacts or if they are so much into their little world that the "outside" of their social bubble isn't worth observing. I am also fascinated by the US food culture as a major city can have a wide variety of different world food things available, and by walking a street I will observe the businesses that are there and if a food place seems attractive I consider it worth trying something from their menu.

What's the best FREE thing to do in New York City? Times Square? The Highline? A live TV show recording? All solid options for every tourist, but arguably the best of all is The Staten Island Ferry, a commuter service which doesn't charge a dime, yet gives you a nice distant view of The Statue of Liberty as well as a great perspective on the skyscrapers of downtown Manhattan. No wonder some ticket sellers try to send you elsewhere or even charge you for a non-existent ticket. In this video I'll show you what to expect and how to use this great ferry service!

Looks like a great use of a day out in nature. I don't get to go on hikes much anymore, but the freakiest hike I've done was when I lived in Colorado and decided to solo hike Devil's Thumb. Found a trail via google maps. Couldn't find a NPS or Backcountry description of the trail and relied on maps data. The app didn't account for elevation change, and I made the mistake of not factoring it in. What I thought was a 3 mile hike in and 3 mile hike out, turned into a roughly 14.5 mile round trip. Hike started around 6,000 ft elevation, up to around 12,500, then down into a bowl where a lake was to around 11,000 ft. The way out, back up to 12,500, then back down to 6,000. Was not prepared. Took about 13 hours, including a brief break at the lake. One portion included walking along the side of a mountain on a "trail" that was the width of my foot. Had to perfectly step one foot in front of the other. One side, was moss/dirt covered mountain, the other an immediate fall off to the valley below. At one point I slipped, fell straight forward to my knee but kept the other leg raised as there was no room to plant it anywhere. All in all a memorable experience and would do it again with better preparation. (maybe)
