Someday, when Amtrak Airo trains are here and keystone service expands to Pittsburgh, Amtrak's Pennsylvanian could use the New York to Pittsburgh subway
@PRR-xx2hp5 ай бұрын
The problem is North Philadelphia station, which is derelict and in a bad neighborhood. The Amtrak crews refuse to use it as a crew change point. It isn't realistic to think of a New York - Pittsburgh train with no stop in Philadelphia. The Aerotrain cars were bus bodies and were too light to stay on the track when pushed through switches.

To me, if the "private car" doesn't have an observation platform on the rear, it's not private varnish!!! Private cars like the Virginia City, Solano, Henry E. Huntington, Yerba Buena are just a few examples of "real" private cars!!! Of course U.P.'s "Heritage Fleet" has many cars which would qualify!!

WoW ! My father worked for the PRR for 45 years. He retired as chief inspector. I happened to see a few 'special' cars but Nothing like this one ! What a beauty. Yes there are truly some folks that love these cars and keep them in private service. I commend you for what you have done..

Thank you, Rob, that's nice to hear. Amtrak workers often come to the car saying that a relative worked for the Pennsy.

@@PRR-xx2hp Dad joined the PRR in '26, in their apprentice program. He wound up in the inspection dept. I'm sure you have seen the picture of the PRR T-1 locomotive at Baldwin works. Dad is the inspector standing to the far left

Ypu could either fly from NY City to Chicago on Spirit Airlines, or you could ride the Francis L Suter railcar .....if you're lucky.

The car carries a pocket of air with it, so at usual speeds there is not a lot of wind on the platform. Amtrak does not allow platform use on the Corridor because of the higher speeds. You notice that this video was taken from inside the parlor.

Seriously considering selling my house to build one of these! However, I would have to add a flatbed section to carry a car or two (and my own crane) to do some local exploring! Are there enough sidings around the country??

Welcome to railroading and welcome to private cars. Join AAPRCO, ride the special trains, attend the conventions, have fun, and get to know people. There is no requirement to own a car, and most AAPRCO members do not own a car.

Sweet rail car...I kind of like the original more industrial look though.
@PRR-xx2hp2 жыл бұрын
The industrial look isn't original, it is from the budget-cutting of the 1950s and 60s. The original look was heavy, dark, and Edwardian, with artificial wood grain painted on the steel walls.

Lucius Beebe's "Virginia City" private varnish had a fireplace in the observation room which used propane gas to fire it up. There was a gold/white lattice door on the right which hid the bar area with alcohol and a matching one on the left which led to the hallway and the dining room, suites and kitchen areas. I have been fortunate to ride on the Virginia City several times, the Solano, the Henry E. Huntington, The Espee business car and a few other more modern ones including a vista dome with an updated observation platform added by the current owner! Fun stuff..... Kudos to all of those who have preserved these wonderful old private cars!!!!
