I'm interested in the geobin, I live in a condo with a pretty small backyard. I've tried different compost systems but none have been very successful. Partly because of the turning, aerating need. That part is very tedious and hard.
@organicoasis569026 күн бұрын
+@mitzimarquez2410 The geobin is basic but I like it. Do you have dirt or will you be putting it on a patio? The geobin does need to be staked to keep it from collapsing. If you are putting it on cement, I recommend the Smart Compost Bag because it has a bottom to it and it is smaller. Both work well but the Smart Bag might be better in a smaller space. We no longer turn our compost but it still breaks down nicely, it just takes longer. You can use coffee grounds to heat it up - Starbucks will give you large bags. Also, worm composting works great as a smaller project without turning!

We have had rain and high humidity in Georgia all summer until just a week ago so all I got from my Gobstopper cherry tomato plants were leaves and a few flowers but many of the flowers fell off, so I don't have the trusses cherry tomatoes are known for. Alot of empty calyx and a few fruit starting here and there. My 15 foot plant literally has 4 green fruit on it now. I also have Ingleheart which are not flowering nor fruiting yet as they were growing slower and not as sturdy a stem or root system as the Gobstopper. Hopefully they won't run out of time before the light goes down to low wit Fall setting in.
@organicoasis56902 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear you’ve had challenging weather this season. I can relate as we’ve been having almost nonstop record-breaking heat this summer. As a result we had to use shade cloth on some of our vegetables to keep them producing. Have you tried shade cloth on any of your Gobstopper vines? If not you might want to give it a try as it may help stop your blossom drop due to the weather. Also, you may want to do some intense pruning on both your Gobstopper and Ingleheart cherries to get them to focus more on fruit and less on leaves. You should prune them on a day without high heat/humidity to prevent shock. I would try pruning off say a third to a half of the suckers, ensuring you get good air flow/sun into the plants interior. Note this pruning is different than that for string trellising where you remove all your suckers so you only have a single vine. If you decide to try these techniques let me know how they work out. Also, if you haven’t already please subscribe to our channel. Best of luck with your gardening! Tomato Tim 🍅!

Also, did you plant your tomato starts as deep as possible when you moved them out to your garden? Doing so will significantly jumpstart your root/stem for maximum growth.

Hi Debbie, i'm north of you on Vancouver Island and, although we don't have your extended periods of heat, we definitely have had several heat waves or heat domes in the last few years. I rotated frozen ice bottles, like you did, but I also ran cold water through the whole system a couple of times when the heat got over 41°C (106°F). The water flowed through all the levels and out the lower spigot. It really brought down the temperature of the bins and, surprisingly, did not cause a moisture problem when I resumed feeding and harvesting. ~ Sandra
@organicoasis56902 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip! That sounds like a great idea. We’re expecting another heat wave early next week so I’ll try this! Do you use your worm leachate for anything specific?
@NanasWorms2 ай бұрын
I keep the spigot open all the time, so I never collect leachate. I don't think much comes out because I've also had the system indoors with a cottage cheese container under the open spigot and never had any liquid in it. When I ran a lot of water through in the heat wave, I immediately threw the liquid on one of my shrubs needing a drink.

I agree that putting some cardboard in the bottom drainage tray is a great idea in those tower systems. Any juices that drip down from above are absorbed and give worms something to eat if they get down there. About every second or third feeding I go down the bottom and scoop up any obvious worms and replenish the cardboard. Looking forward to your garden tour, Debbie! ~ Sandra

Your method of hanging the tomahooks just saved me a lot of headache. I made my trellis out of 6 1/2 foot t posts and 3/4" EMT. Once I got my hooks I realized I couldn't hang them directly on the EMT. Your zip tie and washer method is what I'll use instead of trying to rig wire along the EMT. Thank you so much for your video!
@organicoasis5690 Жыл бұрын
Hi Roger, I'm glad you found my video helpful! With regard to the zip ties and washers, the only caution I'll give you is that you need to use UV resistant ones (at least for the washers), or they may break part way through the growing season. I switched to these UV resistant ones made of EPDM, and they worked like a charm: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07R87RDDG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 Also, a note for anyone using PVC, I recommend putting rebar in the top rail for all trellises regardless of the trellis length. As the weight of the tomatoes increased, the top rails bowed so I had to add the rebar to all of them. I will be sharing the results of my growing 43 different varieties of tomatoes in zone 9B last season, so you many want to subscribe and hit the bell to be notified when I do post that. Happy growing!
