Jack Northrop was 20 years ahead of anyone else when it came to flying wing designs, including the Horten brothers. The Northrop XB-35 bomber design was actually finalized in 1942! Jack built a smaller scale version of the XB-35 known as the Northrop N-9M flying wing that first flew in 1940. It continued to fly until 2019 when it finally crashed killing its pilot. The only problem with Jack Northrop was he was such a forward thinker that he had to wait for other technologies such as jet engines to catch up to his designs and endeavors. He built the Northrop XP-79A that was later redesignated as the MX-324 and it was the worlds first rocket powered pure flying wing. It flew sucessfully on 2 February 1944. A year before the Horten Ho 229 first flew under jet power. The Messerschmit Me 163 Komit rocket interceptors are not a pure flying wing but are more of a blended lifting body based on Alexander Lippisch designs. The Northrop XP-79B Flying Chainsaw was the jet powered version of the XP-79A design and it was powered by two Westinghouse J30 jet engines providing a total of 2,600 lbs of thust. It made its maiden flight on 12 September 1945. Unfortunately it lost control and even though test pilot Harry Crosby baled out sucessfully, he was struck by the wing and was rendered unconscious, and both he and the XP-79B were lost.

Interesting footage. Has the appearance of being towed. A lot of trouble with the Jumo engines and considering the aircraft is made from duralum type pipe framing and plywood, you can be said to be a running test bed for the design. Flying wings have been around since the mid 1920's...all held back by ideology.
