Reshaping the knife is cool and all but how do you actually know what angle (to set the Work Sharp) to the bevel the factory sharpened the knife? So far the advice is to use a Sharpie and through trial and error find an angle. Seems there should be a better way. PS You didn't zero the inclinometer before placing it on the guide rod.

@Why-ym8ch 6 күн бұрын
I think you really need to slow down a little and work on your lateral movement as well. Also, as others have mentioned, zero-out your meter on the surface you're setting up on (and then set your angle with your plate attached and your knife clamped). This system is meant to be easy and accurate but not necessarily quick. Depending on the blade it can be time consuming. But the result's worth it.

The more curved a blade, in our experience it just requires practice to get a consistent bevel angle while moving the blade, but you can absolutely do it.

The "sawing" motion is not recommended for a couple of reasons. First, the downstroke will create a small lip on the other side of blade and second, with the upstroke method, it gives the blade edge a chance to cool between strokes so as to not lose any temper. The best method is to do an upstroke only with a lateral sweep. Also, it is recommended to null the digital inclinometer on the same surface that the assembly is resting on before attaching it to the guide rod.

WorkSharp recommends that you only engage the blade on the upstroke. Also, you need much more lateral movement than back and forth movement. Watching this be sharpened like someone is trying to cut through wood is pretty cringy. The problem with staying in one spot and moving back and forth that much is that you can develop unevenness, across the surface of the blade. When you emphasize lateral movement, you get a much more even coverage across the entire length of the blade

Hi, it’s not true that you can sharpen any knife on this, as stated in the video title. As soon as I unpacked this sharpener today, I realized that knives with a blade thickness >5mm are quite difficult to secure in the clamp. I have several large knives with a thickness of more than 6mm, and if I had known, I would have bought a completely different device. I ended up buying it because in another video, a guy claimed they fixed the problem with thick knives, saying that 1/4 inch thick knives can be secured without any issues, but that’s not true at all. I don’t understand why they didn’t give the clamp a bit more clearance, at least a few millimeters.
@Argali
@Argali 18 күн бұрын
We agree with you on the clamp issue. But we have done kitchen knives with this and it works, but agree with you it takes a little more finesse.
@primarqo
@primarqo 18 күн бұрын
@@Argali Also, when you place a larger knife in the clamp, there’s some flex - the knife bends within it. It’s an excellent device, but for goodness' sake, just an extra 2-3mm of space in the clamp, or a more robust clamp overall, would make it perfect! At this price point, I believe there’s definitely room for these improvements.

How can I get started I’m from texas and wanna do something like this
@Argali
@Argali Ай бұрын
@@anthonyortega8862 thanks for the great question Anthony. A great way to begin preparing for an adventure like this would be to first try out an extended backpacking only hunt out west somewhere. Consider something like a 4-5 day backpack supported mule deer hunt. This trip involved both backpacking skills with the addition of rafting down one of the wildest and most remote rivers in America outside of Alaska just weeks before the onset of winter. The risks inherent in an adventure like this were compounded significantly by rafting the river in late season, icy conditions. Once you’ve successfully accomplished a handful of extended backpack hunts-which can be logistically challenging in and of themselves-you might consider rounding up a hunting party for a float hunt. If you’re not experienced in navigating remote wild rivers for days at a time we’d suggest you have a few hunters along who have this kind of experience. No doubt the rewards for successfully accomplishing an adventure like this are considerable and potentially life changing. Just be sure you and your team are prepared for all the potential risks that can arise. Good luck!

Why didn't you tare the level first? It doesn't matter if the level is butt up to the back of the armature because it's the same angle along its whole length. Also, pick up a big chunky chisel tip sharpie to black the whole length of the bevel. As the knife and the armature and therefore the cutting angle are set, you can concentrate on the scratch pattern. I like to use the whole length of the diamond plate to cut diagonal scraches left to right then right to left, flip the blade, and repeat. I dont know why people are sawing back and forth when you can cover the length of the bevel per stroke

I have a dozen systems and prefer the Work Sharp stuff. Have this and the new version. Just wanted to thank you for showing new stuff like doing a V grind on the BGA instead of a convex. You went into good detail better than most. Much appreciated! My BGA always had an issue with belt tracking but new one doesn’t. I like to keep a V in most kitchen knives so it matches with stones or Precision Adjust Pro I have. It’s nice to get a V on both instead of having to choose which system. I like stones or angle systems for touch ups and the belt for serious sharpening or reshaping. Also does great as a sander for small wood stuff like handles!

Correct me if I missed it, you’re running the Owyhee with just a floor? I’m assuming you’re going to a spot with minimal critters and flying biters and that’s why you’re cutting out the tent insert? Or does the tent alone do a good enough job keeping those out? Thanks and great video!
@Argali
@Argali 3 ай бұрын
Thanks! Great question. Up here where we hunt in the fall issues with critters and flying biters are pretty minimal so we typically don't feel the need to carry our inserts with mesh if we're on a backpack hunt where weight is at a super premium.

@Argali

Yes, technically it would be 40 degrees with both secondary bevel angles on both sides of the blade if thatsbwhat youbare asking. For simplicity, we typically lay the face of the blade flat on the platen and then do 20 degrees off of that so there is less math involved.
