gatekeeping is always misunderstood and treated like some kind of awful thing because people don't actually know what it is. Imagine fandoms or franchises as cells. Gatekeeping is a cell membrane. It tries to keep the bad stuff out and the good stuff in. It also lets those things pass through it. It's not a wall. Most importantly it keeps the thing *separated* from other things. If the cell membrane fails, the cell (the fandom) dies, it's no longer separate from the cold, not alive universe it inhabits. The people who invade the fandoms/franchises intending to change it are exactly like viruses. they infect it, use the fandom's resources to create more of themselves, then eventually burst free killing the fandom and move on to the next one to infect.

Anime was always 90 % forgettable mid or bad shows and it still is nowadays. Animation has been horendous in 99% of shows before 2010s, now its more like 90 % percent because anime got more popular. Background are garbage in anime and always were, only a handful of shows focus on pretty surroundings. Things used to be handrawn but the designs were are just as minimalistic and low effort. The people who write threats are mentally ill twitter users, not normies who watched 10 shows and just joined the fandom. People mostly hate on bad cgi and garbage animation in shows that make enough money to get better animation, but greedy corporations are the problem which mentally sane people understand. From my experience people who bully other people for liking nerd stuff never get into it but more people overall gets into the fandom when their young nowadays and they never bullied anybody for liking nerd stuff because its normalized. The only thing I see normies hating on nowadays is sexualing children in anime which is valid and anime will be fine without it. I hope they wont bring the pc culture with them tho, but i doubt they will considering that it goes with millenial quipy marvel wrtiting and japanese writers are nothing like them and japanese corporations still understand that anime is a runaway from reality even in this era.

We should have gatekept anime better. Because we didn't, it got too popular in the west. And now anime studios are bending the knee to w*ke western culture. I think more elaboration is needed. Shounen women are not meant for uptight _modern_ western women. I've talked to many people online, forums, art sites, chans, and dare I say even reddit here and there over the last 20+ years, there's always been women that enjoy shounen women, be it from Japan, Europe, South American or North. Poor example, but still a decent one: Deviant Art. Extra trashy art site nowadays, but during the last two decades I've seen thousands of female artists love drawing sexy attractive shounen women, even to drawing girl characters that were never intended to be sexy more or less. The only difference now is we have women that are not anime fans watching said anime.
