Bought one as replacement for my Sony that has issue with USB port. Well i went with this one, because i could not justify purchasing again Sony and to pay more than i paid 10 years ago. This one is well made of Chinesium worked for a month, video playback would work ( no 720p support ) but suddenly after just two months it just freezes when i try to play video file. And the sound sound is just horrible, it burned one of my SD cards. Overall cheap Chinese crap, i really do not think it will last a year, well it will do until i buy another quality mp3 player.

I don't believe you can. I'm not saying it's not possible, but documentation is so sparse and hit-or-miss that I wouldn't know how to do so. The left USB stick does read data, so if it were possible, that would be how it could be done.

Noah had a question on current draw while powered down since the screen stays on, I'll put the comment here so all can easily see: I put the radio on the bench and powered it up again to see what the current draw is with it powered down. Here is what I found: *With the unit OFF but still connected to power (red and yellow leads) it drew around 200 mA as the screen was still active displaying the time. *With the unit ON (FM Radio) and the volume down it drew around 400 mA (to simulate the unit running, at a low volume) *With the unit OFF (No Screen Showing) and the red lead disconnected (similar to the ACC being off in a car) but the yellow (memory) lead still connected, I only read between 0.01 and 0.00 mA. So the power draw was so low as to be basically nil. So basically, in order to use this in a boom box/table radio type of situation without killing the batteries, you would have to put a switch on the red lead and power that down so just the yellow/black leads were connected. I confirmed that this held the settings and drew basically no current. A bit inconvenient to have to turn a switch on and then turn the unit on, but in order to preserve power when you're not using it, I guess that's what we will have to do. Thanks for posting the question!

Thomas, read with great interest your thread about this line of SWM units on Parts-Express. Amazing how far Chinese consumer electronics have come in the last 10 years. $30 for this thing? Both cool and a little frightening they can hit that price point with these features and decent quality and still turn a profit (the state subsidies and currency manipulation help of course...). Has anyone figured out a way to power down the unit completely (no standby screen/clock) without losing the memory? Concerned about battery drain in a truck that might not get driven for a few weeks at a time. In automotive, anything more than a 40-100 mA cumulative draw in sleep mode is going to tax the charging system. I read you measured this unit has a 280 mA draw in standby -- way too much. I guess for $30 you're not going to get world class circuit engineering? ;) Maybe wiring in a capacitor or a coin type battery for memory retention? But that's a pretty big screen to keep powered up. This unit is so close to being exactly what I was looking for: - Single DIN - Rotary volume knob - Aux input - No cheap chrome plastic trim - No annoying frou frou like dancing dolphin animations (i.e. Pioneer DEH series) - No branding Only issue is the standby mode and memory retention issue.
@thomaszarbo9535
@thomaszarbo9535 3 жыл бұрын
Noah, I agree with your assessment... this thing is very clean looking and not at all gimmick-y with lots of bright colors and animations, just real nice looking. Regarding the power retention issue...If you notice in the video, I left both the 12 power and yellow always-on lines connected together. After thinking about it more, I believe that if the red power line were removed from power, but the yellow kept connected, it would retain memory but turn off the clock. In a car, this is accomplished by the ignition on/off/retain function of the car itself. In a radio such as I would like to build with this, there is no "ignition" to kill the main (red) line to the radio. If that were switched with a physical switch, with the yellow always connected to the power, it should be able to power down the screen while retaining memory. I'll test this out in a day or two and get back with another comment.

How do i turn off the display? When igual turn off the stereo the clock stay on screen how i turn that off anybody knows?
@thomaszarbo9535
@thomaszarbo9535 3 жыл бұрын
Since its a car stereo, and power is readily available, the screen is supposed to stay on even when the radio is off. The only way to do it is to cut power to the main 12v power line with a switch, but then you loose your settings unfortunately. You could try to hack the board to switch on/off the display, but that would be difficult to do, and may introduce noise into the video signal. If you would like to see some of what I tried to do with this radio, check out the Tech Talk forum at Parts Express website, or link: techtalk.parts-express.com/forum/tech-talk-forum/1432244-alternative-to-faceplate-preamp-unit-for-table-radios

Wow, computer speakers. Umm thats not going to put out much BASS. Not when your used to 32k watts and 6 18" subs. No I'm joking but that's what I used to do in car audio. Dam van hit 157 spl at the windshild. No I was watching a guy use tightbond II and an iron to bend the bend on the long grain side the same way. In fact looking at the mass produced end table next to me they bent the wood both direction and on all 4 rounded over conners. So it can be done. I think i would have used a full sheet. Impressed you used mdf. Im not that big on looks my 12" just going to get painted i used used mdf. That had paint on it. I might wrap it in vinyl or somthing i used a lot of screws. Dont want to risk a router bit on it not a whiteside. Also its down firing its going in a conner at the back of the room where you wont see it. The 12w3 JL audio sub with a 400 watt amp should hit pretty hard. Not bad for a home theater room. It really might be too much bass for this large room. If not ill make one for the 15w6. Almost rather have a 10w7 and 1000 watts. In a ported box all 3 versions.
