Does cooking the trout in the soup make the bones soft enough to chew?

You still need to be careful about small bones, but it is quite easy to put them aside. You can use fillet too - it is a safer choice. Salmon fillet tastes good in this soup :) cheers!

cabbage cooked w/beef/meat is pure heaven. all slavs have a version. i once had a croation one that was delicous...i make a polish one, similar to this, 5 or 6 times every winter...

my grandparents came from poland, belarus, and ukraine. i grew up with this kind of food, and now i make it myself, especially the herring appetizer. its hard to get decent herring in san diego, but its possible...

It is a very delicious appetizer! You are right, it is not easy to find a decent quality herring, we go to European deli stores one in a while, or buy pickled herring fillet (which is good, but not quite the same). We live in Vancouver.

You can use sour cream or greek yogurt without flavour. Or you can use sour cream and add just a teaspoon of mayo. The salad tastes great with sour cream too :)
