Amazing film, the atmosphere left me actually freezing in the theatre, as though an old cadavre unburied in an European enchanted forest.

I enjoyed the transition shots between locations while Thomas was traveling to the castle. Eggers has a really great sense of composition for his scenes, but my criticism is for not establishing a more solid sense of Ellen's loneliness in the very beginning, and for the response from 'the spirit' she prayed for as it was WAY TOO quick. Also, this film should've been shot more from Ellen's point of view and her character arc since she was the one who 'summoned' the 'spirit' and then sacrificed herself to save everyone. Her arc of being 'lonely' and then victimized (a fact we don't find out till much later), and then should've been shown her punishment for being victimized and her struggle to find love with Thomas and then her growing fear that 'the spirit' would continue to haunt her, and then her ultimate sacrifice. I would've liked much more focus on Ellen's character in this version. Everyone else as secondary. Saying that though, I loved the performance of Renfield and his connection to Thomas in this version. That was refreshing. And I really enjoyed the gypsy village scenes. I absolutely adore Willem Dafoe's work, but I wasn't as convinced of his characters' need in this version (maybe it was all of the dust when they found him? lol...), he felt more of a placeholder for an anticipated version of Van Helsing from previous versions, and was only there for the audience. Thanks for posting your opinion of the film and opening up to others to talk about it. I enjoy discussing films and miss my old film groups. Cheers.

Thanks for the comment! Eggers is a phenomenal filmmaker and knows how build his scenes 100%. The POV of Ellen would’ve been an interesting narrative as well. I do agree that they conveyed Ellen’s loneliness a little too fast. However, overall glad you enjoyed the film like me!

For us Mexican citizens it is a very offensive and insulting film, it treats a very delicate subject in a caricatured and mocking way, on the other hand, it approaches Mexico from a racist and Euro-centric point of view, putting the country as something “exotic” worthy of being seen from the morbid point of view of a freak show, taking already worn stereotypes of the country, and appropriating Latin American societal issues with very little seriousness and making fun of them, The fact that they have sanctified the character of Emilia Perez reaches parodic levels and is to some extent insulting to the victims of organized crime, it also makes fun of Mexicans making us look as unintelligent or as people who are not able to discern, I understand that foreigners fail to see all this, but it is important that our voice of Latin Americans is also heard, especially when they will appropriate our countries to profit from audiovisual products, in addition to that, it is quite offensive that a lot of foreign syndicates are rewarding the director for it, by the way, it is worrying how the film is being praised outside Latin America, but in the region it has offended to many Latin American countries and what is even more concerning is how is hasn't even been released in Latin America, sending a very dark message that in reality our voice is not being heard despite these people claim to be "representing" us.

The problem is not "Hollywood." (Whatever that vague term means.) The problem is film festival boards, Golden Globes, BAFTA and critics who start the initial hype and keep it going. By the time the Oscar nominations come out, the Academy is left with the wave already created. AND due to the absurd inclusion casting rules created by corrupt board members with a political agenda, they very easily tamper with the results of the nomination voting. And keep in mind, many of the Academy voters don't even see the films before nominating them. They simply nominate the films that have already won previous awards such as BAFTA. Also, BAFTA and AMPAS are connected by having similar agendas regarding inclusion and subject matter. Major studios create trash, and their minions and employees nominate them. The Cannes, Venice, Toronto, etc film fests are also corruptly connected to the major film studios. The hype is created worldwide, not just in the US/Hollywood.

If you think "Mi camino" it's a good song, I can say that the melody is nice, but even the lyrics are wrong. "Mi camino" (My road) "Quiero querer a mí misma" (I want want to myself) That's the result of translating an entire script with Google Translate instead of hiring a native speaker to make the dialogues make sense. Selena wasn't the only problem. The entire script was... "Escrito con las patas" (written with the feet).

@murmurcub13 күн бұрын
This movie es insulting beyond writing, songs, Selena Gomez, casting, the comentaries of the director/assistant/actors or anything superficial. The cartel is a serious issue that Mexican people face every day, they can kill and r4pe regular people just because, the gov3rnm3nt doesn’t care because they are bought. Anyone who tries to do ANYTHING to prevent this (even if it's by proxy) dies, sometimes in gruesome ways, and put their family in danger. Disappeared people is a sensitive topic and should be treated as such. Instead, this movie mocks real victims, their families and the whole country. How can someone with half of a brain can see this massacre and think that it's a good idea to treat the cause of this suffering as a poor victim, forced to be "evil" just to be later treated like a "new" person because "trans people are pure god-like beings" and "transition does really change the soul uwu", like she is not TRULY trans until she gets a vag1noplasty. Emilia doesn’t show any kind of development or true resentment towards her past actions, d4mn! She is still as sh1tty as before: physically and psychologically abu5ing her exwife, trying to k1ll Jessie's boyfriend, gathering cartel members to a ONG meant to help the people they torture because: "oops! her bad! she is so naive!", SHE DOESN'T EVEN TRULY APOLOGIES TO THE WOMAN SHE THREATENED TO K1LL! This is too much, oh but of course, later the movie portraits her as a F-KING SAINT! Like, do I have to remind that Mexico has some the most religious people in the world? This movie is mocking religious beliefs as well! "It was imposed by Spaniards" How cares!? This was centuries ago! This is still their beliefs because they CHOSE to make it theirs. Why is this movie so d4mn blunt!?!?

Solid review! Player 120 is a great example of how to represent a community (and also a stigma) without over emphasizing it in the show. Hollywood needs to take note. I originally thought the director wanted to emulate the feeling of avengers Infinity War and Endgame. Infinity War still had a sense of being incomplete and Endgame was the conclusion. Like Season 2 & 3. But you're right, Infinity War felt more full with Thanos' story whereas season 2 is abrupt.
@mannleerants368026 күн бұрын

I had my issues with the movie, too. I couldn't escape the sense that the movie was constantly interrupting *itself* to pad out the runtime and force us to come back for the sequel. It just seems like they added a lot of fluff, and if they hadn't, we could have gotten a complete story instead of showing up in theaters to find out that it was a two-parter. But why did you even watch it if you don't like musicals? You didn't even stay for the songs, skipping a lot of important plot stuff. This is like removing the cheese from a pizza, eating it, and then deciding you don't like pizza. If you despise cheese, then why did you order a pizza?

Does the maker of this film even realise how hypocritical they are??! A character who is demonised for wanting to be young and beautiful played by an actress who has stayed young and beautiful. It portrays the main character in a bad light for hating being old (even when she is actually amazing looking and not unattractive at all!) but then it goes on to use aging as the horror element!! SOOOOOOOO hypocritical it beggars belief! It literally shames people for finding aging horrifying, then uses aging to make people feel horrified!! Reply
@mannleerants3680Ай бұрын
I have to disagree on that one. It’s not about how young and beautiful Demi Moore is. It’s about how she perceives herself internally. The film is about accepting yourself and not feeding into society’s obsession with youth and beauty. I see the fight between the old and young version as a metaphor for the violence against your own body. Sue becomes a “monster” which was everything she feared to be. Sue is simply the representation of societies expectations of young women. The film is a commentary on misogyny and women’s toxic beauty standards. The aging is not necessarily the horror element. The horror is from the drug abuse and its side effects. It is not shaming any side. The whole point is to leave the audience reflecting on themselves and to gain an appreciation for yourself.
@superfreakmusic768129 күн бұрын
@@mannleerants3680 If I looked as good as Demi/Elizabeth Id be other the moon! She did not have sagging jowls, face or breasts, she had a fantastic figure and face that many 20 year olds would kill for, and Im sure she still gets a lot of attention from men. But for most women there is a bar and if you fall below it it can make you feel bad. Then it has nothing to do with society, its how YOU feel about yourself. When I had sagging jowls and a sagging face, I felt exactly the same as Lizzie-cancelling nights out etc, and no amount of pep talks about 'redefining beauty standards' or blaming society could make me feel better. When my face lifted, I felt as happy and confident as Sue. Self love doesnt always mean accepting yourself as you are, it can also mean doing something to make yourself feel better. There is only really a problem when nothing you do can evert make you feel better. But if a bit of a nip and a tuck does the trick, women should be allowed to do without being made to feel guilty.
@superfreakmusic768129 күн бұрын
@@mannleerants3680 I would have to disagree on the horror element-they are clearly using images of a severely aged body to produce shock and disgust in the viewers. Otherwise it wouldnt be a horror film. How can it be claiming to preach a message of self love i.e. love yourself no matter what you look like, when they are then using an image of a monster as the element to make people feel disgusted?
@superfreakmusic768129 күн бұрын
@@mannleerants3680 Yes but we are basically being told that its wrong to have the very natural reaction to dislike a process which essentially robs us of our vitality, looks, health, confidence and self esteem. Instead of telling a story that shows terrible consequences for wanting to stay in your ideal youthful state, women should be shown sympathy, not preached at for feeling bad about something that is perfectly normal to feel bad about. I mean, yes, you should still value yourself and others no matter what their age or what they look like, but its perfectly OK to hate what is essentially a debilitating disease. I love all the older people in my life, but I HATE what aging has done to them

So. Just because you don’t like something, doesn’t mean the movie isn’t good. What does that mean? The story writing, storytelling, media literacy, symbolism, impactful visuals, coloring, it evokes emotional connections, it has a theme that connects to the real world, and a compelling story. All of which AND MORE make a “good movie”. You, my friend, don’t have media literacy, an appreciation for actual story writing, and you just don’t like theatre. It’s a literal musical movie and you complained about the “big expressions”. You simply don’t understand the movie.

Few things. One is that I agree that the musical movie was overrated. Don’t get me wrong, it was amazing, but I’ve heard so many people acting like it’s the best thing since sliced bread and that it’s better than the musical. It’s not. Second I want to point out that a lot of what you said has to do with both not understanding the plot and not listening to the songs. Fiyero is actually very important to the plot in the second act, and I won’t spoil it, but there are some pretty powerful scenes with him. Also the whole “why are they so scared and mean to elphie when everyone is diverse” is so stupid because the exact same thing happens in the real world. It is a fantasy world so things considered “normal” there might be things people in the real world discriminate against. In our world there are people who have all different eye colors, but that’s not super common of an issue. Everything humans are scared of to is societal. Finally THE WHOLE POINT IS THAT ELPHIE ISNT PERFECT. she isn’t supposed to be the hero necessarily, just the protagonist. Everything that happens doesn’t take away from her literally torturing Dorthy, it just makes her more human and shows her path. Also ofc she assumes everyone is against her, because her whole life basically everyone is.

I get it, but also you can’t do a review of a movie musical and then most of your points are related to not liking the musical qualities. And also the fact that you skip songs and then complain about the plot is really weird. Most of the important plot points were during the songs, that’s how musical theater works. They convey plot through song and dance. No wonder you thought it was boring.
