If several flights come in together then it can take upto an hour or more clear the immigration. You luggage will be in the luggage hall once you clear the immigration. No, you don’t need a visa as long as you have the boarding pass for your onward flight. Please make sure to ask the ticket agent at the Mexico airport to give you the boarding pass for your onward flight as well. If he doesn’t give you the boarding pass for your onward flight you can still get it inside the arrival terminal at the international flight connection counter at Istanbul airport as long as you are flying Turkish airlines there are few other airlines have their counters right next to the Turkish airlines counter but please make sure to have both boarding passes at the Mexico airport so you don’t have to go through the second process. The only time you need a transit visa if you have two separate tickets from two separate airlines then you need to go through the customs and immigration process and recheck your luggage at the departure counter of the second airline and for that you have to go through customs and immigration process, i hope this helps you understand the process. Yes, as a US citizen you can use the automated immigration counter but it is different from the EU citizens. Once you arrive in Rome you will see two lanes one for EU citizens and one for all passports. In all passport lane they will ask you if you are from US, Canada, Japan, Australia or some other countries then you can use the automated immigration system. The process is very simple. You have scan your passport amd they will take a picture and if everything goes well the automatic gate will open you are through. I hope this helps you understand the process.
