Then it would have to give you at least two sets of "in" and "out" numbers so that you can identify what the rule is between the columns. Hope that helps!

Ohhhh. I was wondering how you would do it if there was addition or subtraction on the bottom. But also I don't understand why "rationalizing" the denominator is important. It sounds like a OCD thing lol
@MyTutoringBeeАй бұрын
😆 yeah, kinda! We rationalize because it makes it easier to work with fractions with a rational denominator. Finding like terms for addition/subtraction, finding equivalent fractions, etc. is easier with a rational number in the denominator. Thanks so much for watching and the comment!!

1. 14-8=6 (not 7) 2. Why not do this with partial solutions? How long from 3:00 to 6:14? That's 3:14. Now just add the two minutes from 2:58 to 3:00. So, 3:16.

1. Eek! Well that was certainly a silly mistake on my part. Thank you for pointing it out! 😬 2. Totally a valid way to do it as well!! I like that method a lot actually and it's my preferred method; however, for many of the students I work with they prefer to just subtract, so this is just something I wanted to put out there to help people! @MyTutoringBeeАй бұрын
How ironic that a silly mistake was made, while I was pointing out how to find mistakes. Congratulations! You found it! What a great reminder that even tutors make mistakes. Even though I try hard to help students catch their own mistakes, I hope to also teach them that mistakes are OK and don't make them stupid. I'm pretty sure it happens to everyone from time to time...probably everyone, anyway. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

I thought this was actually really helpful and I appreciate it because I'm literally so old now 😂 42 and I'm struggling with helping my child who's in third grade do this new math that has been taking place of the old ways I was taught - So thank you so much really helpful. It's not that I don't understand it, but that it is described and designed differently than it used to be. Familiar concepts but without having seen an example I would have had a hard time trying to figure out what the heck she was supposed to do to solve .
@MyTutoringBeeАй бұрын
Thank you so much for this comment! I know the "new" ways are so different than how we used to learn it (I'm 44, so I'm with you!) but this is exactly why I created this channel - to help people see examples and how they can be helpful. There are a lot of different methods to use, so it's all about trying them out and seeing what works best for you!

Wait, I realized that I didn’t do my math correctly lol
@MyTutoringBee2 ай бұрын
I'm glad you commented about this! You would get the same answer. Once you distribute the 3 it would be: 3x+15=18 -->then subtract 15 from both sides: 3x=3 -->then divide by 3 on both sides: x=1 both ways are perfectly acceptable! But a lot of students don't know that you can just divide from the beginning to save a step or two (sometimes)

Maybe re-do this? On the first one in the 2nd group, x/3+7=28. You subtracted 7 from the left, but then divided the 28 by -7 on the other side. Maybe show your students how to check their answers and you would've caught this?
@MyTutoringBee3 ай бұрын

Who came up with this asinine way of doing multiplication? It makes everything harder. If you're multiplying 17×5, 5×7 is 35. Carry the 3 put down the 5, 5×1=5+3=8. The answer is 85
@MyTutoringBee3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I know it may seem wild to do multiplication this way, but for many of my students, this method works very well for them! The standard algorithm (the one you suggested) is also great too, but can be difficult for some students with learning disabilities, dyslexia, or other cognitive processing disorders. Isn't it great that we have multiple ways of achieving the same thing? Multiple ways for students to learn with the method that suits them best?! 🤗

Mad confused my homework I gotta do 2 times cubed root of -54 but I somehow end back up at -54 right after
@MyTutoringBee3 ай бұрын
Ooh, ok, negative inside the root means you are dealing with the imaginary number of *square root of -1* which we usually write as *i*. so, setting the negative aside, you could break down 54 into 3 x 3 x 3 x 2. So that means you have a set of three 3s you can pull out of the radical and 2 is left inside. So now we multiply the 3 that you pulled out with the 2 that's already out there. So now outside we have 3x2=6 and the i for the negative. It would all simply down to 6i√2
@MyTutoringBee3 ай бұрын

The old method you were done in less than a minute, and the box way it took you over 4 minutes to explain....why would anyone want to use the box method ?
@MyTutoringBee4 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for your comment! This video gets that question a lot. With the standard algorithm, I didn't take a lot of time to explain that one, because it's the method a lot of people know how to do already. With the lattice method, it's new, so I slowed way down to make sure to explain all the steps. However, you're right that this method just generally takes longer to do - but for some of the students I work with, sacrificing a little time is worth it for them to get a more accurate answer. The standard algorithm can be frustrating to some students. They'll forget to multiply diagonally, regrouping numbers can get messy and lost, and the constant switching back and forth between multiplication facts and addition facts is too much. I like to teach multiple methods and let students decide which they like best!
