Thanks excellent, Frank McNamara VC a cousin of mine, whose mother was an O’Meara from Borrisokane very close to where Martin O’Meara came from. We wonder if they are cousins. Gerard, Bendigo, Victoria.

@@washyerlookinat7897 I'm not sure .I know Frank's family, I can ask for you. Being as Martin came across from Ireland just before the war, it seems unlikely though. But I can ask

Our O’Meara’s lived 6 miles from Martin O’Meara and I am thinking Martin’s uncles or further back. I believe The McNamaras have limited knowledge of that if Frank McNamara’s letters are anything to go on from his visit to Ireland.

@@MichaelCMadden That's not right I believe, overseas service of 28 days or more qualifies for the 1939-45 star, something went wrong here.

@@JohnMcGillivray-u4b No, there are exceptions to it, quiet a few, including the location of your service. But you don't have to take my word for it, you can look it up yourself and you'll see what I mean. Thanks.

Cheers for this. Back in 1990, I was a member of the Cameron Highlanders of Western Australia 16th BN RWAR B company. Yes I wore the Kilt. Our O.R's mess was, and most likely still is, named after Martin. O'Meara's VC Canteen. I had many a wild time in that wet mess. Big hi to all that served with the 16 BN RWAR. LCPL M Presenza 1990-1995

Hi, thank you so much for the comment. I visited the mess while making the book and took the picture you see in the video of the mess. Did they talk about Martin while you served there?
@themessenger58682 ай бұрын
Yes, Martin was a very respected figure at the unit. We all knew who he was and what he did and suffered. We were all very proud to have such a decorated member. He will always be remembered and honoured for the true hero he was. There's a replica of his VC on the wall of the mess...I stood looking at it in awe as a 21 year old many times. It's a tragic tale that follows Martin. I was in Sydney last year, visited Hyde Park memorial. Made sure to look up and point out to my partner Martin's picture on the VC scroll. My partner commented on how proud I still appeared of Martin, even though I left the unit almost 30 years ago. I said, to her..."some people are just worth remembering, and Martin O'Meara is one of those people." Cheers. Marc

May I ask a genuine question which isn’t meant to be insulting. Why do Australians go so over the top about Aussie VC winners? The UK has hundreds of VC holders and I can’t recall any having such a memorial like that of Moon. I had a friend who won the VC at Passchendaele and when he died there was a full church service and a fulsome report in the local press but it never reached the national press. That goes for almost all winners. Millions of men did valiant deeds but they went unnoticed. I mean no offence.
