This sure brings back memories. Moved to Owings Mills for Kindergarten in 1985. By '87, we were skipping school, crawling through the sewer from Painter's Mill apt's to the mall and stealing from stores all day. We were terrible lil latchkey kids :)) Wish I could've made it back before it got torn down. Haven't been there since '91 :( Thank you for this! Brought me back more than any other OMM video has. Narration is great as well! You sound chill af. Cheers FF!

Fantastic video. And what a shame. I worked at the Britches Great Outdoors in ‘’87-‘88. It was at the bottom of the grand staircase. There were actually four Britches stores (2 casual, 2 dressy, for both men and women). The Gymboree location was a Benetton when the mall first opened. I can still smell the Benetton cologne. The three original anchors were Macys, Hechts and Saks Fifth Avenue (my best friend worked there). Lord and Taylor was not an original anchor. A Ruby Tuesday was at the entrance to the Conservatory, near the exit doors. Other original stores were Abercrombie & Fitch (which was preppy and sold big shirts back in the day), an old school Banana Republic (when they mostly sold safari type clothes), Liz Claiborne, Ann Taylor, Rainbow Salon (I used to get my hair cut there). I remember working Black Friday in ‘87 and the mall was packed. It took me 20 minutes to make my way through the Conservatory to get to work. There was the occasional fashion show on the grand staircase, which of course was right outside my store. I remember hearing Roxette “The Look” and Sheena Easton “Strut” while women in overly-shoulder-padded suits and dresses walked the runway.

Your Austin Peay community salutes you, Phil. We're so proud of you and the contributions you've made to the Washington Nationals. It's a bonus that you share your knowledge and expertise with our current students. You're a Gov leading the Govs, and we're grateful. And as the wife of a great jeweler, I'll say that I'm impressed by the bling!

My brother, Jeff, let us know about your ring and ceremony, Phil. It does say "Wood" right there on the ring, so there can be no doubt that it's yours, and fairly won for a lifetime of making Washington baseball so much fun for the fans, while you have educated us at the same time. You absolutely know more about baseball than anyone else I have ever met. Becky and I are proud to know you as a friend and fellow Austin Peay alumnus!

Well earned, Phil. You've long been in the DC / Baltimore sports writing and broadcasting trenches ... and are a baseball information (and overall trivia) marvel! Thanks, Diane, for sharing this meaningful "social distanced" ceremony that is quite a tribute to Phil ... and so well done by you, Carrie and Becky. When we see Phil next time, we hope we ONLY have to kiss his ring in order to see it! We very much enjoy our friendship with the Woods!!

It was like 9 months since the mall had closed at that point though. Some graffiti and smashed glass isn't too terribly much as far as vandalism is concerned.

Sure this mall was extraordinary and primarily Jewish, but once it turns into a lifestyle center or a retail park, I imagine fountains and towering trees over the parking lots. just like the nearby Foundry Row. Also don't forget to mention all that was Owings Mills is now hills and mounds of dirt and rubble.

Actually a combination of Hunt Valley reopening and Towson Town Center remodeling (which drove business elsewhere) plus the economic recession that hit around the same time are what really killed it. There was of course also a perception that there was a ton of crime happening in this mall, which wasn't super based in reality and more based on affluent white folks not liking that the metro was bringing in business from parts of the city they didn't like. I went to this mall multiple times a week for several years as a teen (basically from age 12-16) and never once had any problem. Meanwhile, I worked at Towson for about four years and saw a ton of crime (assaults, thefts, etc) happen there, but for some reason Towson never got the reputation that Owings Mills did. Wonder why.

Oh yes definitely. That's what I guessed when I watched both videos. I guess it's sort of a "deconstruction" of Dan Bell's style haha. But you have a personal connection to the mall and that's what set your videos apart from his.

I got the store contents of Power Gamer and Wizards of the Coast. So I basically took all the signage I wanted. And a couple of chairs, actually. Nothing too terribly exciting, I really just wanted to have the signage for the two stores that meant the most to me out of that place.

This is a brilliant tour of this mall. It's sad to see it has wasted away from its former glory. I guess I am lucky that both of my local malls here in the Atlanta area are still doing well, though you can tell that things have changed over the years. Record stores are gone, gift shops are gone. One still has the GameStop and a Brookstone. Thanks for shooting and posting this. Sorry to see the place in this state. Hope you scored a few good items in the auction.

Thanks dude! Appreciate it. We have some real choice malls in the greater Baltimore area, but they aren't "my" mall as much as this was, you know? I did get the signage I wanted, for what it's worth. Both Wizards signs are in my house right now!
@ngtflyer
@ngtflyer 8 жыл бұрын
That's very cool, that you got the signs you wanted from Wizards! Awesome, really. I totally get this being 'your' mall. We all had them as kids I think. I know I had a couple. Worked in a few, too. Managed an arcade for a little while. That being said, around 16 years ago I got into my hobby which was inspired by those years in the 80s - I have some classic arcade and pinball games. It's expensive and challenging at times, but hugely rewarding.

Oh, there were definitely shady folks wandering around by the time I went back a few weeks after I shot this footage. I had won a couple of the auctions I wanted so I went back in. Lots of reports from the guys running the auction pickup of people coming in and stealing things. Some of the stuff out of one of my lots got stolen, actually. Nothing I was desperate to get, but it was disappointing. The place was totally structurally sound, though.

As I mentioned in the description, the auction company selling everything off held a public preview, so the mall was open to whoever wanted to go on the day I shot this video. I strongly recommend against going at this point, as basically the whole building was auctioned - stairways, escalators, railings included. By the time I picked up the lots I won a lot of stuff was already gone and it was just wildly unsafe to be in the building. They're going to tear it down this summer and start building a new development on the land.
