Replace the yellow CMOS battery. My 910N (486, very similar in construction) stopped working after years of use. There was a coin cell battery on the processor daughter board and replacing that instantly fixed the problem and brought it back to life. I wouldn’t be surprised if all of your 950N’s just need new batteries!

On my AST Ascentia 910N (which is extremely similar in construction to the 950N), it randomly stopped booting after years of working great. I was amazed to find a *second* battery soldered to the bottom of the CPU daughter card. Easy to miss, and it totally solved my problem when I replaced it. I noticed that you had a coin cell battery on top of your daughter board, try replacing that and I think you’ll be in business.

there's a big difference between 5400rpm drives and 7200rpm drives. just this upgrade will up the speed. also, i remember reading that up to winxp, depending on the amount of ram you have, it will determine what will be installed by the OS. After installation, you can add another stick of ram to speed things up.

One of the issues with the p4 is a long, long pipeline. One wrong branchprediction and it had to flush the pipe, wichs costs countles cycles.

RH 5.2 was my introduction to Linux, I didn't get the box set though, just the system CD which was 10 bucks from a local business. I stayed with RH through version 6 then switched to Mandrake which was very popular at the time, then switched to Gentoo shortly after that came out and stayed with that ever since.

Watching these "retro" videos, of my prime learning / hobby times, surely gives me some "PTSD" feelings, like in this..the ACDSee app...forgot all about that but it all came back, actually that was one of my favourite picture app back then...anyhow, crazy how lot of my brain has erased, all the hardware iterations, GFX card upgrades and so on.. All started from a MS-DOS 6.x + Win 3.1. Now i'm running a MacOS and only been using some of these via x86box running inside an ARM CPU (MacOS)...anyhow, still having a day job doing IT, LOL !

Had a 500Mhz Dec Alpha ages ago. It absolutely thrashed my 180Mhz Pentium Pro. I had Windows NT4 running Fx32 Conversion software that allows you to run x86 binaries on it. Had Office2000 running and native Alpha Corel Draw. Wish they were still around.

This was my exact first computer when I was 8! It's definitely very odd the video card bundled with this unit may not be the factory item. The V in the SPC-3000V designates VGA which my system had. Also it's probably been mentioned, but it had a high speed turbo mode either via a util called turbo.exe in the OEM Dos directory or by pressing Control + Alt + "+ key on numeric keypad" or "- key on numeric keypad" the LED will be either green for turbo (9.54Mhz) or orange for normal mode (4.77Mhz). Thanks for the nostalgia trip. 🙂

Amazing that you were able to fix it so skillfully. Good job! As others here mentioned, it's time to invest in a UPS. But mission critical devices like this shouldn't be this vulnerable to power loss. Poor design Synology!

I was fortunate enough to get a 1985 5160 XT from a place that dealt with vintage computers in 2013. I only got the system unit. I thankfully had quite a few parts from other boxes given to me from old unwanted collections. I got a keyboard with a XT and AT switch. Finally I got an 8-bit VGA that works with my modern screen and KVM that connects to my other vintage systems.

Um, so you're telling me that you suspected the BIOS ROM chip over everything else that could have been damaged by the power loss? The very first thing you should have checked was the actual power supply voltages. Sounds like you fell backwards into that solution but in the end it worked (for now). Get a good quality surge protector or even better add a whole home suppressor to your AC panel.

I remember installing this when I was 11 years old, 1999.. it took me a couple of days to realize you had to use the dhcpd command manually to get an IP-adress from your router haha! those were the days

Synologys hardware is way overpriced and the only reason they are selling their stuff is the software. I switched to QNAP a couple of years ago. Booting QNAPs takes its time but they're working great and have much more bang for the buck.

Got my MSCE with MS Mail 3.2 as one of the electives. The class was a short 2 days. Long enough to create a postoffice, mailboxes, integrate with the client and send some test messages. Also, think there was some routing between postoffices. Took the test with a minimum of 650 to pass. My score on the mail test? 650. Whew!
