Example 1 would be acceptable by most codes. There are a few drawings out there that are exactly like you have it originally with the water closet entering vertically and they are considered correct. If you think about it the wet vent ends where the water closet connects. So the water closet is being wet vented but it’s not contributing to the wet vent. You have the wet vent correctly drawn in orange. Where the water closet enters vertically it becomes a horizontal drain at that point and the waste entering at the top of the pipe is not affecting the wet vent because it’s not entering into it but rather downstream of it. Also the dfu’s of the toilet don’t contribute to the sizing of the wet vent either. Confusing I know. I’ve been wrestling with this question for a long time. I want to see it enter horizontally like you changed it but I think the drawings out there are right when the wc enters vertically as the last fixture. If it entered vertically anywhere within the wet it would be incorrect.

It’s not the 45 that is the problem in your dwg. It’s the sanitary tee at the vent connection to the horizontal pipe. Any drain connections to horizontal pipes must be with sanitary wye and 1/8 bend fittings. Also the vertical drain must be sized as a wet vent and cannot have any toilets on the drain.

I'd like to know how a trap is ever going to be too low. Waste pipe always has to slope up to the fixture. Sounds like nothing but poor planning to me. Do you actually have a plumbing license in any state?

I'm building my own sewer cam out of a 50' endoscope, 1/4' drain snake, and old Android phone. Will use a wheel end for a 23mm camera head and will tape to shim. I had a situation where every time my washer would drain the water was pulled out of the toilet P-trap in the half bath and then the master bedroom would stink of sewer gas. Flushed my vent stacks on roof and hit the main drain to the street with a jetter.

Got a question for you just opened a a ceiling in nyc found a jacuzzi and a shower both coming down with 2 inch traps then the the traps transition to 11/2 drain pipe both connect with a tee and go down the wall in an 11/2 pipe no vent . Do you think me replacing the 11/2 line with 2 inch everything I can see and add a strider vent

Around 2:27 you show a horizontally installed double wye. I thought the double wye could only be used vertically, since you wouldn't be able to get the necessary slope on both branches of the wye in a horizontal configuration. Did I miss something?

I did a tub drain broken pipe on a additional that was from what I was told the addition was done in the late 50's early 60's. . For some reason they were having the tub roto cleaned constantly since the addition was built. In the bedroom addition I had to cut the drywall to get to the back of the tub as the tub wasn't draining flooding the bedroom. Once I cut the drywall out I noticed that the drain pipe was leaning to the side. When I grab the pipe it just pulled up out of the ground. I needed to remove the tub removing four layers of tile, taking out the toilet, and removing two rows of tile on the floor. Once I removed the tub I realized that you could not get to the drain pipe as the concrete floor has little access to the drain pipe.after trying to make the access larger I realized that the concrete floor was 6-8 inches thick. My largest sledgehammer would not ever put a chip in the concrete. So I had to rent a jack hammer. After 6 hours of hammering away e was able to get to the bottom of the drain pipe. What I found was what was left of a drain snake. I ask the owner if someone had cleaned the drain and his response was about 6 months ago. That was the same time that the bedroom was getting flooded. So the people who were renting were only able to take sponge baths before the bathroom would flood. I figured who ever was cleaning the drain broke the drain pipe when I was able to remove dirt to get were the drain took a 90 degree angle the pipe was busted. I ended up renting the jack hammer again. As I continued to knock out concrete it just got thicker. I had remove 4 feet before the pipe had a 45 degree angle. It was at the end of the tile I removed. That was were I found the pipe to be not broken. I managed to replace the pipe. I forgot to mention that the toilet was about 2-3 inches from the tub. So I had to remove the toilet to remove the tub. Once I had the plumbing back together I checked to see if would drain. Nope it would not drain. After looking at everything I realized that there was no vent pipe anywhere. After taking to the owner he said the renters were always plunging the toilet to get it to work. Oh yeah about 1 foot from the toilet was a sink that stopped draining years ago. I ended up climbing up on the roof. About were the sink was what appeared to be a vent pipe. I tried running a snake with no luck. I went back inside figured were the vent pipe might be and cut out the drywall. I didn't mention that the tile went from floor to ceiling in the bathroom. I cut the hole in the hallway. After cutting into the vent pipe about 4 feet up the wall. Only place with out tearing out the door jams. I placed a clean out there then ran a snake down the vent. As I took my time the said that the snake was coming out from the tub drain pipe. After running the snake for about 5 minutes I decided to see if it was the problem. Running water in the drain it flowed with no problem. Not only was the walls of the bathroom tiled up the wall but on the other side of one wall was the original bathroom tiled all the way up Then on another wall the kitchen was located tiled all the way up the wall. Oh yeah so were the floors through out the house. After getting everything back together I informed the owner to get rid of the house before he has to rip the whole house apart in order to replace all the plumbing. I told him it might be cheaper to tear the house house down and rebuild it. Make this story short he put the house on the market "as is". the following week. The first offer he took it with a 😁 smile on his face. He sold it about 10 percent under asking price of the other house in the neighborhood. A couple of months later came the housing crash. Right after the person who brought the house sold out to someone who was going to build apartments. As the lots in the area were really large lots. That person broke even. Better than losing money from the housing crash.

Hi - I'm doing a remodel and my engineer is advising that I sister in studs to my existing studs since I'm removing part of the floor that offers the gable wall. So, this would go from the first floor, cut the 2nd floor plates and up to the rafters. Since I'm cutting my 2nd floor top plate I'm concerned as to what I'm "losing" when I do that and if there's shoring I should have in place until we get the sheathing up on the outside handle some of the shear.

They don't allow a double Y to be used horizontally in our jurisdiction...and the reason is obvious...both sides can NOT both have slope if installed horizontally. Vertical is the ONLY install I would ever use for a double Y...and this usually only on what we call a "high rough" for a septic system...since these usually exit thru the wall instead of going down thru the floor.

I'm trying to wet vent a lavatory from a dry vent used by the shower and am not sure how long the vertical+ horizontal distances can be because the trap for the lavatory is above the floor. It's hard to locate examples online as most use the dry vent from the lavatory to vent the shower, but not the reverse. Is this possible? What are the maximum distances?

SECTION 912 WET VENTING 912.1 Horizontal wet vent permitted. (2021 IPC CODE AND COMMENTARY) Note that fixtures connecting through a double-pattern fitting are considered to be independently connected to the horizontal wet vent. The individual fixture drains vented by a horizontal wet vent must enter the horizontal wet vent in the horizontal plane so that the connection is not below the trap weir of the connected fixture. Water closets, having integral traps that depend on self-siphoning, are exempt from this requirement. Other fixtures that are not vented by the horizontal wet vent (i.e., vented by a dry vent) can enter the horizontal wet vent horizontally, vertically or at any angle in between. Water closets, having integral traps that depend on self-siphoning, are exempt from this requirement. according to the 2023 IPC CODE and commentary. Water closets CAN enter a horizontal wet vent VERTICALLY because they depend on self siphonage AND they CAN but they dont HAVE to enter horizontally according to the information provided in this video However code in ur area may vary from code in my area, AKA take what I say with a grain of salt, especially if your state, province, etc uses UPC or any other plumbing code

You can have 36 fixture units on a 3 inch drain pipe sloping 1/8 of an inch per foot. This should work for 2 toilet and 2 shower and 2 sinks in one 3 inches abs pipe. Information can be found at 2021 IPC Book - Table 710.1(1) Building Drains And Sewers.

Heres something to ponder.... 912.1 Horizontal wet venting states every fixture must connect on the same level of the horizontal. In said section of the commentary the exception on the toilet. This is what it states.... "The individual fixtures vented by horizontal wet vent must enter the horizontal wet vent in the horizontal plane so that the connection is not below the trap weir of the connected fixture. Water closets, having integral traps that depend on self siphoning, are exempt from this requirement". With that being said saying a toilet draws air is not completely correct. A toilet pushes air when flushed that why a toilet does not need to be directly vented and limiting the distance for a toilet to vent is pointless... That would be section 909.1 Distance of trap from vent.

@@homebuildingandrepairs3122 The trap weir or crown weir is the part of the bottom of the p trap where the fluids start to leave the trap and travel down the line..... The case of the video you did this would be referring to the trap weir of the shower. Once it leaves that trap it enters the horizontal wet vent and that must be on the same plane.... For example if you traveled lets say 2 feet from the shower trap to the wet vent and you double 45 down to said vent then that would not be entering the horizontal wet vent at the same plane therefor the shower would need to be individually vented.

@@jwblount7802 That's what I thought and if it's in the code, it does not make sense. It would require a little more math and fixture location might vary. To make it work, your bathtub might need to be moved a few feet in a few different directions:)

@@homebuildingandrepairs3122 I do it everyday just like I described and it works like a champ. I do on average 50 -60 custom homes a year on average, I did 85 of them last year and plumbed everyone of them just like this..... What I have noticed with the IPC it is more on pipe sizing, increase the pipe size and the farther away from the vent the trap can be. But as for the toilet drawing air from the shower it does not. I did a log cabin house years ago and they want ZERO vents through the roof just AAV's. I told them at least 1 has to go out for relief. Nope not gonna happen.... Within 6 months of moving in the house locked won't flush of flushes very slowly and pushing on all of the shower traps. So I went back out there drilled about 12 or more 1/4" holes in the outside cleanout..... Been flushing and draining like a champ ever since.
